UAE to set up refugee camp in Jordan
First phase of the four-phase Emirates camp will accommodate 2,700 refugees
The UAE will set up a camp for Syrian refugees at Mafraq in Jordan, Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Rulers Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of the Red Crescent Authority (RCA), announced today.
He said the first phase of the four-phase Emirates camp will accommodate 2,700 refugees and will be jointly run by the UAE RCA and its Jordanian counterpart.
The humanitarian situation of Syrian refugees in Jordan is getting worse and we should move quickly to secure decent living staples along with medical and relief services, especially to women and children, Shaikh Hamdan said during a tour of the UAE-Jordan Mobile Hospital. Syria is dear to us and we hope the situation returns to normalcy and even better. We also hope refugees get back to their homeland and enjoy security and safety, he added.
The UAE, Shaikh Hamdan indicated, is a bright model of giving that knows no boundaries and limits when facing a humanitarian challenge.
Shaikh Hamdan said the UAE had become the epitome of charity and giving across the world thanks to the consistent support and generosity of its leadership for humanitarian works. Shaikh Hamdan expressed the UAEs sincere desire to offer a helping hand to all those in need around the world in implementation of instructions given by UAE President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Their Highnesses the Rulers of the Emirates.
The hospital was originally based at Mafraq but was shifted to Syrian refugee camps to ease their human and health suffering.
Dr Adel Al Shameri, Executive Director of the hospital, briefed Shaikh Hamdan on the world-class diagnostic, curative and preventive services the health facility provides to thousands of Syrian refugees. Shaikh Hamdan was also informed about the operational plan of the hospital and coordination with Jordanian authorities.
During the tour, Shaikh Hamdan talked with a number of patients and enquired about their health. Sponsored by a group of UAE humanitarian agencies including the RCA, the Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, the hospital was launched last week by the Zayed Giving Initiative and is run by a joint Emirati-Jordanian technical and medical team of 80 members.
