UAE Ambassador to Lebanon Hamad Saeed Sultan al-Shamsi.
UAE Ambassador to Lebanon Hamad Saeed Sultan al-Shamsi stressed that his country welcomes the news emerging from Sanaa.
“We encourage and appreciate the ongoing efforts of the UN envoy to facilitate the safe handover of Hodeidah to the legitimate Yemeni government,” Shamsi said.
“The complete, peaceful and unconditional withdrawal of the Houthi militias from the city and port of Hodeidah is the only step to avoid aggravating the situation in the city and its outskirts,” Shamsi told Asharq Al-Awsat.
Coalition forces are ready to exert more pressure on the Houthis to achieve this goal, and now there is an urgent need to expel Houthis from the city and its port, he added.
The UAE diplomat said that the Saudi-led coalition forces will not allow Houthis to exploit civilians and use them as human shields, abuse or mislead them.
“The military and humanitarian operation in Hodeidah is an integrated plan that embraces both military and humanitarian aspects,” Shamsi stated.
“The UAE's contribution includes 50,000 tons of additional food aid already being delivered in Hodeidah and other nearby locations.”
“Currently, 10 vessels carrying a total of 35,000 tons of food are near, or, on the way to Hodeidah. Additional ships are also stationed in ports in Saudi Arabia,” he explained.
“There are seven aircrafts registered in the United Arab Emirates with a total capacity of 14,000 tons and are equipped to operate as an airlift to transport or deliver humanitarian aid through air landing," the official said.
He further noted that the UAE has contracted with 100 trucks to transport and deliver food and provide them in the form of aid convoys from Aden.
The first convoy distributed the aid in southern Hodeidah, he said, adding that there is a special focus on the needs of women and children.
