WASHINGTON — The United States will not allow Iran to purchase conventional arms after a U.N. prohibition on this expires in October, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday.

"We’re not going to let that happen," Pompeo told reporters at a news briefing. "We will work with the U.N. Security Council to extend that prohibition on those arms sales and then in the event we can't get anyone else to act, the United States is evaluating every possibility about how we might do that."

The United States in 2018 withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal that sought to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. As part of that deal, a U.N. arms embargo on Iran expires in October.

A U.S.-drafted resolution to extend the embargo has been given to Britain, France and Germany, all parties to the nuclear deal, a U.S. official confirmed, but U.N. diplomats said it has not been shared with the remaining 11 U.N. Security Council members, including Russia and China. Russia and China, which hold vetoes on the council and are parties to the nuclear deal, are believed to be eager to sell armaments to Iran.

"The failures of the Iran nuclear deal are legion. One of them is now upon us. ... where China, Russia, and other countries from around the world can all sell significant conventional weapon systems to the Iranians in October, Pompeo said.

"We are urging our E3 partners to take action. This is within their capacity to do," he added, referring to Britain, France and Germany, each of which has the ability to force the "snapback" of all U.N. sanctions on Iran - including the conventional arms embargo - lifted under the nuclear deal.

Several European diplomats said since Washington has pulled out of the nuclear deal, it may not be able to spark a sanctions snapback, but Pompeo on Wednesday pushed back on that argument.

"The U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231 is very clear. We don't have to declare ourselves as a participant...It's there in the language...It's unambigious and the rights that accrue to participants in the UN Security Council resolution are fully available to all those participants," he said.

Some U.N. diplomats said that while legal opinions on whether the United States could do this were split, ultimately it would be up to council members to decide whether to accept a U.S. complaint of "significant non-performance" by Iran.

so... their plan is simple:
if possible snap back the sanctions on Iran.
if not, use brute force so that no one sells Iran weapons.
now considering how they stalled S300 deal, I think they will not allow a single bullet to be sold.

judging by previous US max pressure sanctions and Obama era sanctions, I would say the second part will be done no matter what, and it will be effective.

Well the arms embargo on China from 1989 really curtailed China. Look where it got China to.

To be honest U.S sanctions on arms helped Pakistan to develop so much, look outside of the box and work with numerous countries

If they hadn't sanctioned us we would still be stuck under the U.S

Respectively speaking here, Iran and China just are not in the same category when it comes down to brass taxes.

China was/is rising as a global force for many reasons and has access to technologies, production, resources, industry, man-power, economic growth, expansions, trade deals and much more that Iran just doesn't have whatsoever: or if it does have it then it's too a much lesser degree. This isn't me knocking Iran, it's just how things are currently.

See, Iran will keep on producing its own domestic line of weaponry in-spite of the unjust sanctions, but it can't really hope to produce high-quality big-ticket items like the rest of the world due to the severe restraint in resources and money.

Idk man, I hope the Russians and Chinese will disregard the sanctions and sell Iran much needed defensive equipment but with the way Pompeo is wording it, America might actually be dumb enough to physically try and stop deliveries if they can, but I doubt it. Could just all be bluster, America is well-known for bluster.

Iran produces everything on its own....and what it doesn't produce yet it will unveil over the next 2 years....

Iran needs nothing from outside except fighter aircraft....and even this must be either J-31 or Su-57 and they will be available from 2025 anyway

Let's hope Iran can get a good deal for a decent number of Su-35s and Su-30SMs with TOT (or at least some TOT) in the near-future.

For tank---Iran has Karrar and Sabalan MBTs

For APC and IFV-----it can build it on its own--BMP2 for example---and I'm sure in 2 years some good types will be unveiled

armored cars and MRAPs----Toophan or Raad MRAPs and Rouintan armored car

self-propelled howitzer---Howeizeh and Raad 2 is just fine

MLRS---Fajr-5

anti-tank missiles and MANPADs----Iran build its own

UAVs---Iran can exports them

Radars---Iran builds many types of them

helicopters: Shabaviz , Bell 214, Typhoon attack helicopter ...many others...and waiting for Shahed 216

Trainer aircraft------Yasin subsonic and F-5 as supersonic trainer

Air defenses----From Herz-9 to 3rd Khordad and 15 Khordad and Bavar 373----waiting for Iranian Pantsir

cruise missiles---Soumar, Ya Ali, Howeizeh cruise missile

anti-ship missiles---from Nasr to Noor and Ghadir and waiting for unweiling of that ramjet missile they are talking about

local torpedos---Hoot for example

ballistic missiles---no comment....here Iran is a leader

submarines-----Fateh submarine is just fine and 3000 ton sub is in design phase

frigates-----Damavand and Jamaran

destroyer----7000 ton destroyer is in design phase

SO IRAN NEEDS ONLY A FIGHTER JET AND MAYBE FEW TRANSPORT AIRCRAFTS AND REFUELING AND AWACS

Add to this economic problems and I don't see any reason to spend hard currency to subsidize foreign defense industry.
