U.S. plans to reimpose sanctions on Iran: treasury secretary

WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The United States is planning to reimpose sanctions on Iran, said U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Thursday, ahead of President Donald Trump's decision on whether to extend sanctions relief on Iran under the 2015 nuclear deal.

"I am expecting new sanctions on Iran. We continue to look at them. We've rolled them out," Mnuchin told reporters at a White House briefing Thursday afternoon.

Mnuchin's remarks came as the world is waiting for Trump to decide if he will reimpose sanctions on Iran, a move that may endanger the landmark Iran nuclear deal.

Trump's decision was expected to be made at a "decision meeting" on Thursday, said U.S. State Department spokesperson Stephen Goldstein.

"I'm not sure when the announcement will be, whether it will be tonight, or whether it will be tomorrow. But we do expect a decision to be made later today," Goldstein told reporters during a Thursday afternoon briefing.

In a telephone conversation with Trump on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated "the determination of France to support the strict implementation of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and the importance of it being respected by all signatories," said the Elysee Palace.

In July 2015, after a decade of strenuous negotiations, Iran and six major countries, namely, China, Russia, Britain, France, the United States and Germany, struck a final agreement on Iran's controversial nuclear program, in which the West promises to relieve sanctions on Tehran in exchange for a halt in Iran's efforts to develop a nuclear weapon.

However, as one of the most significant diplomatic legacies of Trump's predecessor Barack Obama, the hard-won nuclear deal formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has been running the gauntlet of Trump on his campaign trail and since he became president.

In October, Trump announced that he had decided to decertify Iran's compliance with the pact.

His move triggered a 60-day window for Congress to decide whether to reimpose sanctions on Iran. Reimposing sanctions would mean violating the Iran nuclear deal on the U.S. side.

The Congress did not come up with any resolution, thus passing the ball back to Trump, who should decide on Friday if he would like to waive energy sanctions on Iran.

Despite the Iran nuclear deal, the United States has kept on slapping separate sanctions on Iran, accusing the country of having a ballistic missiles program as well as human rights abuses.

Its a very troubling possibility, but I almost hope he does do this just to see what the reaction [if there would actually be any in fact] of the us "allies",and of course far more importantly for iran, the reactions of the other signatories to the agreement would be,of course for rouhani the deal has likely already served its main purpose anyway ie it got him reelected which I suspect was probably his main reason for suggesting it in the first place, anything after that ie economic benefits was just going to be an extra lucky bonus. The other question of course is what will his government actually do,if anything,in response to this if it actually happens,my guess would be probably nothing really, perhaps just some vague bluster like the marine/naval reactors proposal that literally sank without a trace.
The irony is that I dont think trump genuinely gives a damn what his western "allies" or anybody else thinks about himself or the us in either the short term or the long run sadly, but this also makes him quite capable of doing very stupid ill considered actions to the detriment of the west without likely even a second thought.
This was where I personally think iran made one big mistake in the jcpoa and that was destroying the core for the arak hw reactor,it should have been placed in storage at a safe monitored location until the replacement core was ready and delivered [a big if] and only once that replacement core had actually been installed, fueled and checked out would the old core have finally been put beyond use, sadly this was not done because iran it seems did not learn at least one of the lessons of the failed[bogus?] dprk/us agreed framework deal.

With the candidates that ran for office Rohani would have won the election with or without the nuclear deal due to his politics!

Raisi the candidate the conservatives rallied behind sounded like an idiot in the debates and he sounded more like a preacher while Iranians were looking for a president! And Qhalibof was too liberal for most conservatives to rally behind and far too conservative for most liberals! So Rohani would have won regardless!
Fact is the only way a conservative could possibly win a presidential election in Iran without cheating is if he develops the guts to sacrifice on a major social policy like "Hejab by force" to win the vote of the majority!

The only reason Ahamdinajed won his 1st time around was strictly because he was running against Rafzanjani and the vote was more a vote against Rafzanjani than a vote for Ahmadi

There was no decisive winner in the 1st round and because Rafzanjani advanced to the 2nd round a lot of people voted against Rafzanjani & not really for Ahmadi! And if the votes that went to Karroubi & Moeen would have went to Rafzanjani he would have clearly won but that didn't happen!

For the past 2 decades Iranians have voted a certain way over and over again! And almost all the people that don't show up to vote adhere to far more extreme liberal social policies so the conservatives are already maxed out

Most candidates are banned, so people have no choice. They should make a choice between some clerics (conservatives/reformist show). It's a one party system (islamic republic party) with minor differences in the party which is split in 2. This is the second reformist show (before we had khatami), if it brings no change, people should not vote anymore and let the extremists like raisi win so that the country and the system goes bankrupt.

Right because Iran should run an election with over 1000 presidential candidates! Come on, THAT IS ABSURD!

Yes the vast majority of people that sign up don't pass the vetting process so what? Over 1000 people sign up every election!

If your not a member of a legal & official political party in Iran with approval from that party to run then clearly your shouldn't pass the vetting process!
If you don't have years of experience either working in a high position in a previous administration or experience in governing or experience as a lawmaker.... then you really shouldn't pass the vetting process!
If you have major legal issues and corruption charges pending then you really shouldn't be approved!
If you can't fully pass a vetting process by Iran's Intelligence agency due to the time you spent out of the country, unknown funds,.... then you shouldn't be approved
etc, etc,....
For Iran to even run a presidential elections with even 50 out of 1000 registered candidates would be absurd so even the names of qualified candidates need to get cut down one way or another!

A person deserves to be Iran's president that has spent decades inside the system trying to get there!
