The U.S. Navy has agreed to come on board India’s much delayed Naval Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program and will audit tests and provide feedbacks to the Indian team. The U.S will join the Russians and the Europeans who were earlier roped in to realize the LCA project which has been delayed by over 15 years.

The U.S Navy Carrier Suitability Test Team is the latest of three foreign consultants to join team LCA. Among the many problems the LCA program is faced with, one is the weight of the prototype which is heavier by 500 kgs over the requirement of a carrier based fighter. The Test Team is expected to tackle this issue. According to Indian media reports, the U.S Test Team will not be paid for its services.

In 2011, the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Group (EADS) was introduced to the program in order to help developers reduce the weight of the fighter.

Meanwhile, the Gromov Institute in Russia is currently testing the Kaveri engine on an Ilyushin-76 engine test bed aircraft and has completed 55 hours of testing at the Institute.

The Naval LCA-NP1, also known as Tejas, made its maiden flight a week ago at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore.

This is good news, having the help of the Russians and Europeans is fine but when it comes to carrier ops no one knows more or has more experience than the USN. They should be a great boost to the N-LCA Programme, these are the same guys who have helped develop the F-18 and F-35C in the past.

This is most interesting:

US are really trying to win over India.

While I would'nt use the same words to describe this, the US has been on board for some time. The USN has trained a few successive batches of IN aviators in CATOBAR operations. Since IN had lost touch with CATOBAR since the advent of the V/STOL Sea Harriers and conversion of the carriers to Ski-jumps.

This may bode well in another direction, eventual revival of CATOBARs in IN; probably as early as IAC 2. IN has already been pitching for it, though they would like EMALS rather than Steam Cats. Lets see what happens.

They want India Strong, we should not lost a single oppurtunity....

They want indo US relations to be strong just that it does'nt exactly means they want strong India .

Anyways thanks to them for their support I really hope they will assit us in further training too.

Doesn't INS Vikramaditya use STOBAR configuration ? Why are we going to the USN instead of the Russians ?

Catapult assisted or ski-jump in the end it is arrested recoverys only. That is where the airframe undergoes the maximum stress. The USN helps in validating the design as they have more carrier take offs and recoverys under their belt.
