U.S. gives China 72 hours to shut Houston consulate as spying charges mount

Consulates are meant for spying. What's new here?
Consulates are meant to make life easier for Chinese and Americans so they don't have to travel to DC or other places. But at least this time not many are willing to make that trip to China.

China is looking to close the United States consulate in the city of Chengdu, located in the country's southwest, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday, citing anonymous insiders.

Besides the one in Chengdu, there are four other consulates in mainland China: in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Wuhan along with a consulate general for Hong Kong and Macau. The diplomatic site in Wuhan has also been under consideration for closure by the Chinese authorities, according to an earlier report.

Washington has ordered the shutdown of China's Houston consulate "to protect intellectual property and private information," while US President Donald Trump hinted that similar measures may be imposed on other Chinese diplomatic outposts. In turn, Beijing rejected the US claims, describing them as "groundless fabrications."

There is a big difference in "Looking" and "Closed". I guess people understand that.

Your friend Nilgiri said we have no balls, but when we close the consulate in Chengdu, you said its stupid. So should you be our next FM? Just relax and create the DMZs, good for both sides, it's just 1 to 2 km inside India, nothing to be ashamed of. Lol

@Nilgiri Rubbed it in didn't ya.

You missed the point, your retaliations are as much as worth banning Corn exports from the US in retaliation to the US trade war.

China has five consulates in the US, including the one in Houston. The US has six in China including the one in Hong Kong. There are at least one thousand and several hundred more staff in the US consulate in Hong Kong. Why does it have so many people there? It's too obvious that the consulate is an intelligence center. China actually has many countermeasures. For instance, China could target the US Consulate General Hong Kong and Macau. Even if China doesn't close it, it could instead cut its staff to one or two hundreds. This will make Washington suffer much pain.

Based on Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin's remarks on Wednesday, it's certain that China will retaliate. This will make all US consulates in China upset. Let them be nervous. They probably are all making emergency plans, packing up documents and preparing to burn them. China will finally target one of them. Before China announces its final decision, all US consulates in China will be upset and nervous.

no matter how hard USA try china should not give them a chance of war and escalation . USA is falling apart as super power and they badly need a war for survive . but this time there should be no war let USA became another UK . china should calm down and laugh .
I understand where you're coming from, and i think China is doing so. But the big problem for US is that i feel its military and financial willpower at this moment is on the lower end...especially when you consider how things are going internally in the country. US govt will still have to divert $$$ billions back to citizens because many are in need.
Yes i was joking about trump winning. Not a serious post.
ha ha ...my bad...

They closed down our consulate, we closed down theirs. You expect us to invade US for that? Or you want us to kill 20 and capture 60?

Trade war? Look at the first trade deal..... Pretty much what we wanted to give them in the first place, buy more US products...and ya think corn doesn't hurt? Lol

The head of the Chinese Consulate in Houston won’t commit to closing the office — a direct threat of defiance to the State Department’s demand that it be shut down by Friday.

In a wide-ranging interview with POLITICO, Cai Wei, the Chinese Consul General in Houston, said China is protesting the closure order and his office will remain open “until further notice.”

LOL we refuse to shut down our consulate. That means the Chinese government is now occupying territory in the United States in open defiance of Washington DC. Our territory is becoming bigger and bigger!

What evidence? Storming a consulate will be considered as war.
Well said, American will chicken out on this

Last time, they had plans to bomb a Chinese embassy, they gave up fearing war with China

To be fair this was during the Bombings in Belgrade when the US was bombing Yugoslavia again using something from 1999 to justify the world order in 2020 shows the lack of depth you have then again not surprised if Indians are this Ameri-centric

Neither China nor US of 1999 are the same today.

China is much stronger while US is much weaker in 2020.

Promises and dreams of Hanoi vs reality of Dhaka. Nuff said. Our opponent was not 10+ times smaller either.

This rankles them. They didn't release the total casualties they faced in their failed hanoi operation either....because same totalitarian red book complex in operation.
