Turks sign deal with Qatar for military base in Qater

Later on the LPD will probably be based in Qatar imo. I don't think the LPD would be needed in the mediterranean area as all of the potential adversaries are nearby the Turkish mainland, and the countries in the western mediterranean are peaceful anyway. From Qatar the LPD can be sent on humanitarian and peacekeeping missions to africa and asia. Plus if it is based in qatar the navy doesn't have to worry about getting permission from egypt to pass through the suez every time it wants to go to the indian ocean, just pass through once or sail around the cape of good hope once and then make yourself at home in qatar. Turkey has probably also agreed to help qatar secure some of its sea trade in return for this base. Qatar has a small military so a brigade sized force from Turkey would be a major boost for them as well. Win, win situation.

Im not an expert on these issues but that's what I think.

As both a Turk and an Iranian, I have very mixed feelings about this. As a Turk, I'd love for TSK to be assertive, and have bases in friendly countries. As an Iranian, I feel this is a move to 'encircle' Iran. I mean, why should Turkey send it's navy and 3000 soldiers to Qatar? AFAIK this is the first time Turkey opens a base in a foreign country? I mean, why would a tiny country of 200.000 people (not counting exats) need so many foreign bases? US etc. Can somebody please enlighten me here? I'm actually quite worried here.

And about Iran having troops in Syria, I agree, I'd rather not have them there, but those troops aren't there to 'encircle' Turkey, they're there to kill those animals that were unleashed upon the middle east.

So, what kind ships will be sent?:-)

No we're not sending any ships. There's a permanent Turkish naval presence at the Gulf of Aden. (P.S Currently there isn't any since 5 major warships are deployed to NATO missions with 3 of them being in Northern Europe). They'll serve as logistic support base for Turkish Navy.

Edit: As far as I know even the USN does not designate the homeports of amphibious assault ships and CVNs at locations outside US (except for Japan) why would Turkey?

It seems your Iranian side takes over the Wheel.

Iran is supporter of Shia brotherhood in Syria, Iraq and Yemen. This block is cutting the land route to Gulf countries for Turkey; therefore this move is neccessary in this respect. Saudi Arabia and other countries showed their reaction to Iran recently. Iran except for South Azerbaijan is really a rough country in all respects. That is why any move to keep it under leash is always a good step for the peace of region.

Except for the interests to keep Iran in leash, the move needs some serious perspective.

First the Turkish Forces in Cyprus, it'd be the second time :)

3000 soldiers to Qatar

because we turks have good relations with qatar they buy our stuff and they have strategic good place for something like our LPD.. even if history wasn't well it is well nowadays..

iran is not so important as she wants to be..

I'm not talking about the importance of Iran. I mean it just seems provocative for one of the 'rivals' to put 3000 soldiers next door to another of the 'rival's (rival=neighbours of 80 million pop each). Not that there is a war going on there, I mean the US has Iran surrounded for over a decade, but is this move a prelude to something bigger?

Well, to me North Cyprus is like Guam. Not totally a part of the mainland, but yeah, part of the mainland.

Heck. a 'leash' is fine with me. As long as it's not more. South Azerbaijan, well, there comes the Turanism again, I won't touch that. But hey, as long as there is no shooting war, I'm fine with this. Hope Turkey gets some cheap gas from Qatar in return.

On a more strategic note, can this somehow be construed as part of the 'Asia Pivot': the US slowly moving out, and putting in friendly neighbourly countries in it's place? Like Obama said: some kind of equilibrium between the 'sides'. So Turkey slowly replacing the manpower/boots on the ground of the US in the region?

If you do not back up your arguments in following talks, then please avoid using big words in the first place.

It has nothing to do with provocation, it's just some Turkish soldiers in Qatar and a deal between the MB friends, nothing more. I don't think Iran even gives a damn about this news.

That's fine then. I just like tensions in the region to go down.

If It was in Medditerranean, It makes sense, since We have problems with Greece. A LHD group with 8 F-35B, protected by TF-2000's equipped with Gezgin LACM, Atmaca SSM approaching to Greece from SouthWest at a likely crisses will drive Greeks to seperate their forces into many pieces thanks to deep fear such a naval manouvring will spread but A Naval base in a Persian Gulf will just serve to introduce some shiny warships to angry Mullahs which will drive them to threaten us with exercises introducing tens of their kamikaze boats next to our base attacking/exploding themselves, then claiming to attack that base with 10,000 boats. :D I don't suppose Qatar base will serve our benefits If Qatar don't guarantee to fund TF-100 or TF-2000 frigates.

Well the Iranian regime sees even defensive NATO mechanisms in Turkey as a threat to itself, so i dont believe that Iran doesnt give a damn about a Turkish base next to its doorstep, not that the base would be a threat to Iran but neither is the NATO missile defense shield...

When Iran threatened us, It make me laugh. They sometimes compose such BS statements cause of desperation that They can't predict How those speeches will be wellcomed abroad. What doesn it mean, "If Israel attack Iran, Iran attacks Turkey" ? :D so In paralel to this logic, If Iran attack us, We should attack Greece ? I really wonder If this Idiot Mullah general serve to Iranian army at present. If He is already active, Most probably, He will threaten us like "If Turks construct a naval base in Qatar, We will attack Pakistan" like statements... :D
