I always thought the Turkish people were very secular people, not the most Islamic around. Some of the Turkish people I have met considered themselves more European than Arabic.

But you have spent time there, so you know better. What's the Turkish general population reaction to this? Are they happy with this development?

Highly possible as Turkish Military have repeatedly intervened in the past to stop their country from going the 'religious' way or they feel that the Govt is not in tune with the principals of Modern Turkey and its founder Ataturk.

Let me give you another example. If a group of Pakistani civilians without the prior permission from GoI or GoP rushes towards Indian Kashmir in a convoy and IA had to shoot to kill to stop this convoy will you as a sane Pakistani cut all ties with India because of the stupidity of some your compatriots.

Turkey going mad enough said

Turkey is not going mad, Turkey has awoken from the post WW1 we are weak mentality and is now looking outward to regain her former influence (with the blessing of both Russia & the USA). The USA clearly demonstrates that power is not necessarily about a game of conquering other nations but rather it is about the power of influence.

The Arab world loves us, goes crazy for our Turkish TV shows, we send aid to Pakistan including the world's largest electricity generating ship, we purchase Bangladesh products at market value & they purchase our products at a discount which in effect aids their economic development and these my friend are just some of the rising "soft power" (influence) that Turkey is building. We also aid non Muslim nations such as Georgia, Ukraine, Macedonia and even Russia; Turkey today is reaching out to whoever will accept her and those who treat this partnership badly will find that there are consequences to childish actions (sanctions are the most obvious that come to mind (see Tel Aviv stock market panic)).

Powerful nations always try and build influence & it's not just about building a military base in foreign lands but more about cooperation and co-development. Modern-era Empires of the 21st century are powers of influence not powers of conquest as some people in this thread have hinted at/suggested which shows that they lack knowledge of geo-politics.

Where do you think the West gets their oil from? Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iraq and Iran, none of them recognize Israel. Same with Indonesia and Malaysia.

Ahem...83% of US oil comes from home production, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Nigeria....Europe produces it's own oil or buys it from Russia...It's basically Asia buying oil from KSA, Iran, UAE..ah but these are just facts...

Turkish people are secular but they resent too much secularization by military. Ofcourse there are fringe fanatics. Same cannot be said about Kurd though. It's east vs west divide (east being Kurds). All Turks look down on Kurd. I have never met a Turk who had ill feeling against Israel (like shown here). Ofcourse they were upset since 8 Turks were killed in flotilla incident but even they recognize that Erdogan is losing it. Just ignore the cheerleaders from other Muslim countries. Most Turks probably will feel more at home in Greece than in Bangladesh, ever.

u r right but if i can remember just months ago ordogan had a considerable support during elections and won it easily and if i can remeber nobody came and said there was some rigging , so here u go the elections were fair and for sure more then half of the population is with him ( approve his policies ) and the rest even if there is doesnot matter coz in democracy majority rule.
