Turkey and Russia are discussing the issue of conducting “joint patrols” in Tal Rifaat town of Syria, according to security sources, following coordinated patrols of the two Astana guarantor countries in the rebel stronghold of Idlib province.

“Coordinated efforts are ongoing in order to prevent attacks from the YPG in Tal Rifaat in the region of the Operation Euphrates Shield,” a security source told a group of journalists on condition of anonymity. The latest of these meetings were held on March 11, the source noted.

“Negotiations continue for carrying out joint patrols with Russia in this region,” the source said, noting that negotiations are also underway to prevent ”terrorist attacks” against the northern city of Afrin.

Turkey and Russia last week started coordinated independent patrols in Idlib as part of a deal aiming for a cease-fire in the rebel stronghold. The source said “joint patrols” are also on the agendas of the two countries for this region.

Tal Rifaat is a strategic town in between the regions of Operation Euphrates Shield in Jarablus and Operation Olive Branch in Afrin.

In February 2016, the YPG captured Tal Rifaat, which is located in the southeast of Afrin. The move was to consolidate their hold over the region between the east bank of the Euphrates River and western Afrin, thus linking all the territories under their control.

But during Operation Euphrates Shield, which began in August of 2016, Turkey-backed troops captured Al-Bab district, located between TalRifaat and Manbij, rendering it impossible for the YPG to link its two cantons, Kobane and Afrin, which was under the control of the YPG at the time.

Turkey assumes the YPG as the Syrian branch of the outlawed PKK.

Ankara accused the YPG of forcing some 250,000 Arab residents out of the city to leave their homes during its initial control of TalRifaat.

For the past three years, many of these displaced people have been residing in the nearby city of Azaz, located adjacent to Euphrates Shield’s area of operations.

HTS/Al Qaida/Saudi & UAE proxies

HTS isnt Al Qaida. The break up with AQ is real. Not some political ploy. And certanly not a proxy of Saudi/UAE.
Best comparison is Hezbollah, they are Syrian sunni version of Hezbollah. Speaking od HTS, they recently announced to all foreign figters gruops to disband, memebers then can join HTS if deemed fit, those who refuse will be disbanded with force. AQ bots went crazy. 24 ours later, numerous HTS raids on foreign figters hideouts, houses etc... were executed. They say it was anti-ISIS op, but Im sceptical. I think they did an early sweep of individuals and gruops for who they knew they will have a problem with prevoius decision, individuals close to Huras al Din, only syrian AQ affiliate. I think they are weakining them, before final showdown. Regime bombngs are deleying full on operation. I recon this decision has something to fo with HTS-Turkey negotations and deals. Turkey wants them infold, to merge with National Army project when conditions are met. Even Turkish designation of HTS as a terrorist org is a negotiation tactic, part of wider dynamic.

HTS is Al-Qaida, or the successor of it in Syria. Maybe some minor ideological differences but same shit. For years they refused to work with the other Syrian opposition and kicked their asses out of Idlib now too.

It's more complex than that.

He odvously missed 2 hours of speach by Zawahiri bitching about HTS lol
Maybe he didn't know.
Even right now... the "True" AQ related groups of southern Idlib are asked to disband and join HTS OR face military actions by HTS... Right now... an all out war btw AQ & HTS could happen anytime...

Bin Zayed reinforced the same message to Pompeo. He told the US secretary of state: “You are leaving Syria to be under Iranian and Turkish influence and that will bring everyone back. They will act against your acts and our interests.”

I think an operation will start soon by the way. I'm hoping we will see upgraded tanks in action.
