Not a fan of Erdogan by any means but considering that the West most definitely would not back up Turkey against the Russians it is more safer and secure for Ankara to build a gradual alliance with Russia.

Europe is in no position to dictate terms to Turkey btw. Europe right now is in a crisis. Brexit was a HUGE blow and similar referendums could follow in other countries. If the European project ends then countries like Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, Netherlands etc.. who do not have nuclear weapons will be reduces to vassal states. The days when these countries had huge empires are over and western european countries right now are split between the right wing and those who are of immigrant background/leftists. Europe is on a knife edge and it will only get worse if Turkey and Russia consolidate a political/energy alliance.
