Turkey To Join Coalition Against ISIS ?

.
WSJ says Turkey no longer US ally, air base should be moved

US daily The Wall Street Journal has claimed in its editorial on Saturday that it is the "unavoidable conclusion" that the US needs to find a better regional ally to fight the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIL) than Turkey, suggesting that the air base Turkey is currently hosting should be moved somewhere else.

Recalling Turkey's reluctance in joining the anti-ISIL coalition, the editorial said not only will Ankara take no military action, it will also forbid the US from using the US air base in İncirlik—located fewer than 100 miles from the Syrian border—to conduct air strikes against the terrorists.

"That will complicate the Pentagon's logistical and reconnaissance challenges, especially for a campaign that's supposed to take years," it added.

The newspaper said the US military will no doubt find work-arounds for its air campaign, just as it did in 2003 when Turkey also refused requests to let the US launch attacks on Iraq from its soil in order to depose Saddam Hussein. It said Turkey shares a 910-km border with Syria and Iraq, meaning it could have made a more-than-symbolic contribution to a campaign against ISIL.

The daily described it as a "reality" that the Turkish government, a member of NATO, long ago stopped acting like an ally of the US or a friend of the West. The editorial quoted former US Ambassador to Turkey, Francis Ricciardone, who said this week that the Turkish government "frankly worked" with the al-Nusrah Front—the al Qaeda affiliate in Syria—along with other terrorist groups. It claimed that Ankara also looked the other way as foreign radical groups used Turkey as a transit point on their way to Syria and Iraq.

The WSJ noted that İncirlik air base has been a home for US forces for nearly 60 years, but perhaps it's time to consider replacing it with a new US air base in Kurdish territory in northern Iraq.

"America may no longer have friends in Ankara, but that doesn't mean we don't have options in the Middle East," the editorial concluded.

That's really awful. After Turkey, Next options would be Iraqi Kurdistan, which means changing westerners position to fully support kurds, or moving to Southern Iraq, which means getting close to Iran, which is again awful, and third option would be moving to Cyprus, which means more support for greeks, and troubles for turkish cypriots. Seriously guys, who is in charge of foreign policy of Turkey?!!!

so according to WSJ's lopsided pro-America point of view, Turkey is an ally when it carries out orders from the US? and now that Turkey tries to look at its own interests, it is not considered an ally? good riddance, imo this whole Turkey-west 'alliance' was nothing but hypocritical, unfair and a biased farce to begin with anyway. Let the US sort out its mess out. I will curse Turkish officials if they even dare to think to allow the US use Turkey as a springboard, while Turkey will face the brunt of the counter-attacks of course, or send even just 1 Turkish soldier to fight and die for the US' grand chess game in the ME. i hope this was a good experience for the current and future Turkish leadership to never engage in such shady activities, no matter how justified it was in the beginning with the moderate fsa.

After the rejection of Turkish help in The last Usa operation to Saddam Iraq; Turkish interests in the region have been taken upside down, remember our red lines about our most important strategical policies regarding ıraq, turkmens and terrorists. Now the Pkk terrorists are ally with Peshmerge, Syrian Opponents, and now some nato countries.

Today I have read an ''interview'' with Hasan CEMAL,pro terrorist 'writer', What that guy claims and says made me a little bit startled. He is nothing but a piece of sh.t. However, His stance and the position of that terrorists and their supporters in our country is gaining more and more ground. In international arena those terrorists and kurds are getting more supporters and serious politic position. where we get during The Akp term is really turning our future and sovereignity into the last times of Ottoman empire.

today I watched the speech of Davutoğlu delivered in the ceremony of Söğüt for Ertuğrul gazi. He never said ''Turk'' in his speech, not even once; He mentioned about three states Selçuk, Ottoman and Turkey; but never said ''Turk'' in his speech. The Pm of Turkey avoids saying ''Turk'' in the ceremony for the father of a Turk WHO founded the last Turkish empire ''ottoman''.

I am not writing this for cheap purposes, I am writing this because i geniunely start to believe we are close to finishing in digging our own grave.

Don't be emotional my friend. USA is the most pro-turkish western country, and has always had a much more positive position about Turkey, compared to europeans, and also has always a much more positive position about Turkey compared to Russia, and China's block position about Turkey. Consider F-16, and F-35 deals and you would find that USA would only let a limited countries to have such extensive access to these top notch American military technology, and products of recent decades. Every friendship comes with some costs and benefits. Even if Turkish government does not want to directly participate in operation against IS, still they should not refrain USA to have access to incirlik.

Interesting post. If Turkey refrains to have cooperation with west, west would find another allies who will be our enemies. Turkish foreign policy have been very wrong.

The West or terrorists are not important at this point; because we are digging our own grave by our own hands, let alone others. Those policies do not leave much to others to dig the grave for us.

I have read some articles in last two days written in different sides, today i have tried to check it a little bit and wrote some of those in my previous post. The claims in those articles are not propaganda or cheap mind games. It is happening right now; and our state and the Akp is busy with paralles state, which shows us how much the akp minds Turkey.

not emotional, bro, rather by looking at US' past behavior against Turkey you can see that they are not much better than some hypocritical EU countries. our countries, Turkey and Azerbaijan, should be cautious and not be used for the games of US and Israel in the region. no matter what, key part is that Turkey should not become the punching bag as a result of the west's games in the ME. They are far away, Turkey is right up in the nose of IS and whatnot.

Turkey should consider withdrawing from NATO, since it finds our friendship to be such a burden. We paid for half of Turkey's air defense, we protect Turkey under our nuclear umbrella, we support Turkey's defense industry with large purchases, we grant an F-35 assembly line to Turkey... But it seems all of that counts for nothing.

On the other side of the table, it's less and less clear what value Turkey brings to the alliance, other than Turkey not openly declaring hostilities against us. Turkey does not aid in our campaigns, and it doesn't even passively allow us to use bases there to conduct our own campaigns. Furthermore, it demagogues against us when we act (no thanks to Turkey), and then complains when we do not act.

Help me out, here. Does this look like an alliance to you?

Does Turkey have responsibility to aid you in your campaigns which is terrorizing humanity throughout the world!? USA showed many times in the history that it is unreliable partner, often abandoning allies, or backstabbing allies.

We should simply delete NATO. Cold war is over. No communist threat nearby. All this warmongering US policies are bad for business. US acts as savage animal. EU can create its own army. And I am sure USA can solve its issues by itself. UN should also re-design itself, like removing permanent seats.

This Alliance damages us, yes. USA should stop damaging our economy and our region.

What are you talking about?
What airdefence,those outdated Patriots?
You allow a F-35 assembly line,or is it because of the partnership in the F-35 program?
What are those large purchases,if they were cheaper with the same quality somewhere else you would have bought them there or not?

You know as well as the whole world does that Turkiye is especialy in this case the most important player in the region.
As for the ''passively'' allowing the use of bases, whats passive about that, the ISIS would just kill the Turkish hostages for aiding.
Now lets talk about the current governments stance,im not a fan of Erdogan and he is only trouble for my country.
You should blame Erdogan for all this,we have a big cleanup to do after his departure(if ever).

Leave these Iraq, iran,Afagnistan,Syria to themselves..Allow them to take care of themselves..It is a area where it is useless to spent any money on them to protest them...Because for them theire God is there to protect them...Allow them in their Gods hand and enjoy the show?...
