The mood of the government is hardly a factor if the results of the behavior are identical: economic over-extension.

And unlike the US, who foolishly poured resources into the invaded countries voluntarily, with no plan for return, Russia will have to prop up any new annexed lands, which are undoubtedly poor. This alone is what will make them stop in Eastern Ukraine, not some fear that NATO will risk a full thermo-nuclear exchange over a relatively vanilla 20th century game of chess between two old foes.
