Turkey to build its future with Europe, Erdoğan says

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Saturday that Turkey sees itself in Europe and seeks to build its future in the continent.
"We see ourselves in Europe, not anywhere else, we look to build our future with Europe," Erdoğan said in his online speech during the Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) congresses in several provinces.
“We will find a proper place in the post-pandemic world by improving our judicial infrastructure, strengthening the foundations of our economy, increasing production and employment,” he added.
Last week, Erdoğan said that Turkey was entering into a new period for both the economy and the judiciary and that Parliament will prioritize the new judiciary reform packages next year. He pledged a new economic growth strategy that will enable an improved investment climate for foreign investors backed by an efficient judicial system, saying that the strategy would be based on stability, lower inflation and international investment.
During Saturday's online speech, the president also noted that Turkey wants to enhance its cooperation with its allies, saying that Ankara has no problems with any country which cannot be solved through dialogue and diplomacy.

Europe is probably horrified. If turkey joins EU their will be a refugee rush which will overwhelm their economy. He has used the threat of opening his borders as leverage before.

Wrong. Turkey future lies with the middle-east countries. After all Turkey has ruled them before via the Ottoman. Turkey just needs to make a nice comeback. Countries like India, Russia and China have nothing in common with Turkey.

I am talking about geopolitical choice of Turkey - East vs. West, not about local interests.

Turkey has been trying to be in Europe ever since end of Ottoman Empire. Europe does not accept it. This is now almost a century Europe has been giving Turkey a cold shoulder.

Now things are changing. Restrictions related to Treaty of Lausanne end in 2023. In the last few decades the world order is gradually changing. There is a shift now towards the East. Turkey has innumerable opportunities having a very strategic position straddling Europe and Asia.

Turkey will be better off to build its strategic alliances in the East. For Europe., Turkey is only good for NATO. Europe is not willing to bring Turkey as economic partner, although Turkish economy is better than many EU members. Those biases against Turkey exist since the Ottomans.

That is true. You and I live in Europe so we know this situation more than non-european. I think most Turks like Erdogan prefer to make alliance to muslim countries and building the ummah stuff like that after all, its was him who took the initiative to condemn France (an important member of the EU) for the freedom of speech. Turks like him basically has the desire to lead the islamic countries block or like to form one in the future. Something like OIC 2.0 or Ottoman 2.0 version with Turkey as its leader.

The Turks wasted the chance they were given.
The next opportunity may come again in hundred year.

Turkey will never be accepted as European for one reason and that is because they are Muslims. The West are either racially racist (right wing) or culturally racist (left wing). Neither will allow any country to change their dynamics. Dont worry though, whites will be minorities in their own country in a few generations so just play the waiting game things will change.

Fact. Turkey was very secular when it was first established as a modern state. It banned alot of religious acts but still Europe never accepted them fully, like you said being Muslim is the biggest issue.

The future for Turkey is to continue building economic relations with the west but also Asia and MiddleEast. Build military alliances with the Turkic nations and Pakistan and other allies.

I don't agree how Erdogan and AKP party takes aggressive anti West stance, then gets stuck and then backtracks. They nearly had major issue with Russia for no reason and then backtracked, then went for S400 missile system and Usa kicked them out of F35. The Turkish government should have known this before hand. They need to mature up.
