What's new

Turkey lifts ban on head scarf in Army for female soldiers.

a good step indeed . even US army has allowed Turban for sikh soldiers and even Hijab for Female muslim soldiers if it does not effect the camouflage scheme . its not like Turkey will become Islamic republic.

.
What a change!! This is the power of Sabr and Shukr. Reis Erdo'an and his Muslim party have fundamentally made a turn-around effect for Turkey like the reorganization of the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Mehmut II (1808-1839), which led to its ultimate collapse and creation of the Republic...

.
How is that? If it's optional, as I believe the choice should be, then it's no move towards a proposed Islamic Republic, but rather towards liberalization.

They allow religious dress so long as it's dress-code and color-code compliant. I think this is a good decision for Turkey, so long as it remains a choice, not a requirement.
Why she is not saluting like others?

This is a good decision. Following religion or not following it is a personal choice and should be treated as such... the banning of valentines day in Pakistan is the opposite action which is similar to this. Too much fanaticism is not good as well as curtailing the principles of Islam is wrong too. Though hijab is not a must it still is based on personal choice whether a woman wants to wear it or not. Forcing someone to do anything is wrong.

Although I agree with your points but there is a big difference between private life and public sphere. That boundary is even sharper when the case is law enforcement or the military.

When I put that uniform on. My religious and political choices regardless of how odd they are, are not a part of my body. Having stars on your shoulder straps comes not only with power but with an even bigger responsibility which is to represent the State and the Nation as its only armed national power that takes its power from the constitution.

The biggest problem islam faces today is that even when praying or giving out to the poor, vast majority of muslims somehow enjoy doing these things in the loudest way possible to show people how religious they are as if the God too actually lives on this planet.

Now, if the regulation was mentioning headscarfs, beards and all sorts of religious rituals for the recognized minorities (jews/armenians/greeks); that's what we can agree on. But when you do it purely by political islam; it is not okay at all.

The Armed Forces never had a problem with islam at all. Heck, before executing any fire control operation Turkish sailors say "bismilah" on radio then say "fire!" or "bismilah anchors away". And every single surface combatant of Turkish navy carries a Kuran at its mast since 1081 (even before than Selçuklu era). They are the traditions of those served before us.

Then why western countries are doing it? Because they are dumb?

It is totally okay at all! And I'm saying this as a liberal Muslim person, who supports the rights of (Muslim) woman and LGBT persons as well. I'm not interested in what people wear or eat or think. As long as they fulfill their duty in the military no one has the right to criticize or vilify a Muslim female soldier who is ready to die for her country.

Nope. Firstly, I need to mention that putting so called western nations as a reference is something I would strongly oppose. But most of the countries you may refer to are those that have integrated civic nationalism into society a long time ago. But yet by taking such decisions for every minority at all areas have divided them. The way we see them is different because we face dozens of terrorist organizations. They are indeed more polarized than we could. Thats why they started tearing apart actually. UK and US first now France. Others will follow the suite. Their societies will be divided unfortunately. And such freedom looking privilege provider decions will make the same effect to Turkish public which is already in turmoil. Hopefully we will get over it one day and rise as one body.

@The Eagle Not sure why my post was deleted - I can't reply to the message you inboxed.

I wasn't insulting Islam - I was mocking him for thinking the biggest 'problem' Islam faces is muslims are loud and proud of their faith.

How is that insulting Islam!? I was challenging his assertion!

In the United States the First Amendment allows people to forgo mandatory flag salutes on religious grounds, as an objection. While I haven't heard of this happening in the United States Armed Forces, it's possible that may be the case in the Norwegian Armed Forces, though I can't confirm whether that's the case or not, though I expect it is.

That would actually be a good reason to throw them out of the military again.

Sarcasm is the worst kind of discussion too and mocking is not allowed so my friend, points need to be discussed straightforward to avoid such confusion in-case. That post was reported.as it seems but now you are clarifying the matter then treat that as soft-reminder to avoid posting of ambiguous or incomplete posting.

That was a pre-warning means a soft/friendly reminder without any point fraction.

Keep on with discussio at best.

Tell me, do you think Jewish soldiers in USA, Israel or any other country would be provided with kosher food? If so why? Kosher food is manifestation of religion as much as headscarf?
