Turkey's military says two of its warplanes chased an Israeli aircraft that allegedly violated the airspace of the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state, where Turkey is exploring for oil and gas.

A military statement late on Wednesday said the Israeli plane violated the airspace five times on Monday until the two Turkish F-16 jets forced it to leave the area over the Turkish Cypriot north of the divided island.

The statement didn't identify the type of Israeli aircraft and there was no immediate comment from Israeli officials.

Ties between Turkey and Israel have been strained by Israel's treatment of Palestinians and the discovery by Israel and Cyprus of huge offshore natural gas deposits.

Turkey opposes any energy search by Greek Cypriots, has dismissed a Cypriot-Israeli deal demarcating their maritime borders, and retaliated by signing exploration deals with the Turkish Cypriots.

What a sensationalist title. :)

Report: Turkey scrambles jets after Israeli craft enters Turkish Cyprus airspace - Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News

"The report added that the warplanes approached the Turkish ship despite incessant warnings by forces in Turkish Cyprus, according to which the planes had breached the territory's airspace.

Ultimately, the report indicated, Turkey launched two F-16 fighters to track the Israeli planes, at which point the IAF fighter jets returned to Israeli airspace. "

No one chased anyone, they just tracked and monitored.
Sort of like Turkey does to Greece.

I thought attack on Turkey is on attack NATO. Where is the reaction of stupid NATO ?

Turkish jets stop 'Israeli violation' of airspace

Turkey says it scrambled two military jets to chase away an Israeli plane which allegedly violated the airspace of Turkish-held northern Cyprus.

A statement from the Turkish military says two F-16 jets were used to force the Israeli plane to leave the area.

An Israeli military spokeswoman told Reuters they were checking the report.

Interesting news indeed

Attack? What attack?

On a serious note : Why would Israel do something of the sorts when their relationship with Turkey is already severely strained ? Could it be a 'feeler' of a sorts to see what kind of diplomatic reply that induces not only from Turkey but from others in the vicinity, from NATO and the US ?

They are in the making of anti-Turkey unity. Greece, Israel and i won't be surprised if Armenia soon joins them.

The question is why Israel is doing this. What the **** is wrong with Netanyahu.

Its not an attack and even if the question is, even if Israel decided to attack North Cyprus, would NATO recognize this as a attack on Turkey since North Cyprus is not recognized internationally.

Israel doesn't have any reason to attack Northern Cyprus, doesn't have any strategic value, or anything else. However it's probably a "feeler" like someone suggested.

So I'm just a 'someone' now !

Everybody relax.

This was not an attack or anything so dramatic, it was just a "Hey there" from Israel. Similar to the hellos Turkey and Greece sometimes exchange with their airspace violations.

To remind Turkey that trying to use force to coerce anything on Israel is not possible. Turkey's foreign policy towards Israel has been quite belligerent, and that has consequences.
