Quran Desecration Shows Arrogant Powers’ Enmity with Islam: Leader
- January, 26, 2023 - 09:34
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei denounced recent acts of desecration of the Holy Quran in Europe, saying they signify the arrogant powers’ hostility against Islam.
“The insane desecration of the Quran, which is committed under the slogan of freedom of speech, shows the arrogant powers’ attacks are aimed at Islam itself and the Quran,” the Leader said in remarks posted on Khamenei.ir’s Twitter account on Wednesday.
“The Quran is shining more brightly every day and the future belongs to Islam despite the Arrogant Powers’ plots. All freedom-seekers of the world should stand by Muslims in confronting the wicked plot of insulting sanctities and spreading hate,” Ayatollah Khamenei added.
On Monday, Dutch politician Edwin Wagensveld, the head of the far-right PEGIDA, tore pages out of the holy book before setting them on fire in front of the parliamentary building in the Hague.
A video posted on his social media accounts showed Wagensveld claiming he received permission from local authorities for “the destruction of the Quran.”
His provocation followed another Islamophobic protest on Saturday in Sweden, where a Danish extremist burned a copy of the holy book in a police-approved demonstration.
The Muslim community worldwide has been outraged since the weekend at anti-Islam activist Rasmus Paludan, who staged his provocative demonstration in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm while delivering a hate-filled speech, and the Swedish authorities who allowed him under the guise of “freedom of expression.”

Iran: Quran burning in Sweden aims to fuel anti-Muslim violence
Right-wing extremist burnt Quran outside Turkish Embassy in Stockholm
Syed Zafar Mehdi | 21.01.2023
TEHRAN, Iran
Iran on Saturday strongly condemned the burning of the Quran, Islam’s holy book, by a Swedish-Danish right-wing extremist in Sweden, calling it an attempt to stoke hatred and violence against Muslims.
In a statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said some European countries under the false pretext of advocating freedom of speech "allow extremist and radical elements to spread hatred against Islamic sanctities and values."
Rasmus Paludan, the leader of the Stram Kurs (Hard Line) Party, under the protection of police and with permission from the government, burned a copy of the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm on Saturday.
Kanaani said despite the strong emphasis on human rights in Islam, Europeans continue to "institutionalize anti-Islamism and Islamophobia" in their societies.
He added that the desecration of the Quran is a "clear example of spreading hatred and fueling violence against Muslims", which has "nothing to do with freedom of speech and thought".
The spokesman emphasized that Muslims worldwide expect the Swedish government to "prevent the recurrence" of such incidents and ensure the act doesn't go unpunished.
Paludan, the far-right extremist, has earned notoriety for his anti-Islamic activities.
In April last year, he stirred up a hornet's nest after announcing a "tour" of burning the Quran during the holy month of Ramadan.

January 26, 2023
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has condemned the burning of the Quran in Sweden, saying that insult to Islam, its holy book and the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is an insult to all Abrahamic religions.
President Raisi added that the desecration of the Quran and Islamic sanctities is an affront to humanity.
He rejected Western claims that the defiling of the Quran is about freedom of speech. The Iranian president said such sacrilegious acts are actually a violation of freedom of speech.
Earlier Iran’s leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has said the insane insult to the Quran under the pretext of defending freedom of speech shows that the global arrogance is directly attacking Islam itself and the Quran.

Tens of thousands of Iranians protested in Tehran and other cities denouncing European governments for allowing the desecration of the Holy Quran.
As a form of protest against the
Holy Quran's desecration in Stockholm and Denmark, tens of thousands of Iranians have flocked to the streets in Tehran, as well as other cities.
Following Friday prayers, people throughout Iran demonstrated and chanted slogans decrying the insult to the sacred text.
According to protesters, the horrible crime is a
provocation against the sanctities of more than two billion Muslims. Moreover, Iranians demanded that
European governments contain the situation and put an end to Islamophobia.
European governments, however, excused this sacrilegious act under the guise of free speech.
Rasmus Paludan, the Swedish-Danish Hard Line party leader and renowned Quran-burner, vowed, earlier today, to burn the Quran in front of the Turkish embassy, on the Friday of every week, in a provocative act to pressure Ankara to support
Stockholm's bid to join NATO.
Paludan stated "I will proclaim that this is Erdogan's fault. Now that he doesn't want to let Sweden into NATO, I have to teach him about freedom of speech until he does."

Muslim leaders in Lebanon on Sunday unanimously condemned the burning of a copy of the Quran on Saturday in Stockholm, Sweden's capital, by Swedish-Danish right-wing extremist Rasmus Paludan.
Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shiite party, as well as Lebanon's grand mufti, Abdel-Latif Derian, the highest Sunni authority in the country, called on the Swedish and international authorities to punish Paludan's act.
Paludan burned the religious text in the vicinity of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm, as part of a demonstration authorized by the Swedish police.
Sweden's responsibility
In a statement on Sunday, Hezbollah "condemn[ed] this infamous criminal act against the Islamic faith and the sacred symbols of Islam, and consider[ed] this event to be part of a series of shameful attacks on the Prophet [Muhammad]," Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported.
The party added that this event constitutes "a serious abuse of the Muslim community around the world, which cannot be silenced."
"We hold the Swedish government fully responsible for this hideous act and call on it to immediately punish those responsible and prevent the repetition of such crimes," Hezbollah added.
For his part, the Jaafarite mufti, Ahmad Kabalan, who is close to Hezbollah, said that Islamic and Arab countries "should not only condemn but also take strong punitive measures against Sweden."
"What they call freedom is nothing more than a curtain of civilized crimes and pyres against everything related to Islam, in this Western scourge, this West from which Hitler came," the mufti added, according to statements relayed by several local media outlets.
'Present draft international laws'
In the same vein, Derian denounced "the tolerance of the Swedish authorities towards the extremist leader Rasmus Paludan."
Derian denounced the "heinous act based on hatred and provocation against all Muslims in the world," calling for "judging anyone who undermines Islam and the Quran and punishing him accordingly," the NNA reported.
In a statement issued on Sunday, he called on international bodies and organizations to "present draft international laws preventing the infringement of God's laws … to prevent this kind of racist behavior that adds hatred between people and nations."
In the afternoon, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati denounced in a short statement published on Twitter "an insolent assault on monotheistic religion and what Islam stands for."
"Such hateful behavior will not achieve its goal of damaging the Islamic faith and its essence," he said.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Sunday deplored a "deeply disrespectful act" in the wake of the Quran burning in Stockholm, expressing "sympathy" for believers after several protests in the Muslim world.
Last week, there was outcry in France after cartoons published by the satirical newspaper
Charlie Hebdo depicting the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Hezbollah denounced these drawings and urged "the French government to take strong measures to punish" the newspaper's cartoonists.

UN body condemns Quran burning in Sweden
Alliance of Civilizations and several Muslim-majority countries denounce stunt by Danish far-right party leader.
Published on 23 Jan 2023
The high representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations has condemned the burning of the Muslim holy book by a Swedish-Danish far-right politician as a “vile act”.
Rasmus Paludan, leader of the Danish far-right political party Hard Line, carried out the stunt outside the Turkish embassy in Sweden under the protection of local police on Friday.
“While the High Representative stresses the importance of upholding the freedom of expression as a fundamental human right, he also emphasises that the act of Quran-burning, amounts to an expression of hatred towards Muslims,” a spokesperson for Miguel Angel Moratinos said in a statement released on Sunday.

“It is disrespectful and insulting to the adherents of Islam and should not be conflated with freedom of expression,” the statement added.
Moratinos, who heads a UN agency that describes itself as “devoted to promoting understanding across diverse communities”, said he was concerned about the rise in “discrimination, intolerance and violence … directed against members of many religious and other communities in various parts of the world”.
He called for the building of “mutual respect” and promotion of “inclusive and peaceful societies rooted in human rights and dignity for all”.
‘Racist action’
Shortly after Paludan burned a copy of the Quran, Turkey’s foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu,
condemned Swedish authorities for failing to ban the protest.
“It’s a racist action. It’s not about freedom of expression,” he said.
Arab countries – including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait – have also denounced the stunt as well as other Muslim-majority countries such as Pakistan and Somalia.
“Allowing this hateful act that insults Islamic sanctities and values is completely unacceptable,” Somalia’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Monday. “It is nothing but a demagogic practice that promotes hatred and racism and serves the agendas of extremism and terrorism.”
In a post on Twitter, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that while freedom of expression was a fundamental part of democracy, “what is legal is not necessarily appropriate.”
“Burning books that are holy to many is a deeply disrespectful act,” he said.
A group of protesters gathered outside the Swedish embassy in Ankara over the weekend to decry the Quran burning. In Bangladesh, people also demonstrated against the incident.
In April, Paludan’s announcement of a Quran-burning “tour” during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan
sparked riots across Sweden.
