VIENNA/ANKARA (Reuters) - Austria and Turkey accused each other on Monday of responding inappropriately to clashes between Kurdish and Turkish protesters in Vienna last week, further straining relations.

On Wednesday, a brawl broke out after Turks heckled a Kurdish gathering in Vienna, police said. That was followed by clashes on Thursday and Friday between Turkish counter-protesters and about 300 people taking part in a Kurdish demonstration, according to a police count.

Stones and fireworks were thrown. Such violence is rare in Vienna, which has a large ethnic Turkish minority.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry strongly criticised Austria’s handling of the protests, which it blamed on groups linked to militants of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

It accused Austrian security forces of meting out “harsh” treatment to the Turkish protesters.

“Austria’s ambassador to Ankara will be invited to our ministry and informed of our concern,” it said.

Austria's conservative Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, a vocal critic of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, called on him to stop interfering.

Kurz told broadcaster Puls4 on Monday evening that he would continue his restrictive course on migration, otherwise Austria might have to deal with other, comparable imported conflicts.

"We see in France where it can lead if integration policy goes wrong," Kurz said.

PKK militants have been waging an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984 in a conflict that has claimed more than 40,000 lives. The PKK is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.

Earlier on Monday, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg expressed to the Turkish ambassador "the clear expectation that he contribute to de-escalation rather than pouring fuel on the fire," Austria's Foreign Ministry said.

Austria said police intervention had prevented worse violence and pledged to find out who was behind the clashes. The police made 11 arrests and seven officers were injured in the clashes, the Interior Ministry said.

ANKARA: The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Monday (Jun 29) strongly criticised Austria's handling of Kurdish protests in Vienna by groups the ministry said were linked to Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants.

There were some small Kurdish demonstrations last week that Turkish nationalist counter-protesters sought to disrupt, throwing stones and fireworks, according to Austrian police.

Police said they made three arrests and that another protest on Saturday was peaceful.

"Austria's ambassador to Ankara will be invited to our ministry and informed of our concern about the four days of protests, and the use of force against Turkish youths by Austrian security forces," the ministry said.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Twitter on Sunday: "We do not want to see images of violence in the streets in Austria, particularly in Vienna, and will therefore not allow conflicts be brought from Turkey into Austria!"

Austria's Foreign Ministry said over the weekend it would invite Turkey's ambassador for a discussion on Monday.

PKK militants have been fighting an insurgency against the Turkish state in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey since 1984.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

The Turkish military is currently conducting operations against the PKK in northern Iraq, where it has bases. The PKK is designated as a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.

The ministry said it condemned "harsh intervention" by Austrian security forces which resulted in youths of Turkish-origin being injured and some workplaces belonging to the Turkish community suffering damage during the protests.

I was there, the attacks started after PKK/Antifa thugs used provocative slogans and terrorist flags.
They were beaten and ran in a club house which was also attacked/besieged.

It was funny that the same idiots who insulted the Police later called the Police to safe them.

Look at the title, manufactured by the OP's arse itself. You can smell the provocation from 10 km away :)

They are holding Austria passport and 3rd generation of Turkish community there. But you sound like Kurds are local to Austria (LOL) and the Turks who came yesterday beaten them.

There is a non-written rule.... If someone itch, you scratch :)

Kurz time to time speak loud to Erdoğan in Austria... Then sits like arse-slapped little girl before Erdoğan when they meet.

Some of our friends went there for the event from the Netherlands,i asked for films and pictures.
Lets see what they come up with.

Loved it also when some random Bosnian and Afghan friends joined the Turkish side :-)
They came for the show, but stayed for the action.

Similar incident 2016 some PKK thugs raised their terrorist flags, provocations started and then ended up with seeking refuge in McDonalds.

Police is doing nothing when they raise terrorist flags, but if a Turk does the Grey Wolve sign he will get prosecute with ridiculous high fine.
