the Turkish army received the go-ahead from the country’s parliament to engage in military action against Islamic State insurgents in Syria and Iraq. Meanwhile, a senior NATO official said the bloc's involvement is “practically” possible.


Ankara lawmakers on Thursday also authorized foreign forces on Turkish territory when participating in operations against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

"The rising influence of radical groups in Syria threatens Turkey's national security...The aim of this mandate is to minimize as much as possible the impact of the clashes on our borders," Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz told parliament.

Parliament approved the new one-year mandate, with 298 deputies voting in favor and 98 against the motion.

However, no specific commitments have been made just yet. “You shouldn't expect any move immediately after the mandate” passes, Yilmaz told reporters before the parliament vote on Thursday.

Part of the mandate dealing with foreign troops in Turkey directly references US pressure on Ankara to permit the use of Incirlik air base in the Adana region, located in the south of the country.

Parliament’s decision followed a change in the nation’s defense policy signaled by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last week as Islamic State fighters came close to the Turkish border with northern Syria.

Gentlemen, Sirs, is it possible for Turkey to conquer Syria ? I am in the position that under Turkish suzerainty and protection, peace and stability can occur in Syria, and in the middle east. I support Turkish active role in Middle Eastern peace and stability.

Conquer ? not something we want and not something that will happen, at best a no fly zone, air strikes and quick land operations(together with NATO).

AKP might get crazy and go againts Assad as well, but if its costs us significiantly, they would pay dearly for it in next elections.

Can we really trust Assad regime to develop the nation now after all that has happened? Neither can we expect contribution from radical forces that are sympathetic to ISIS/ ISIL.

Turkey, as a shining democracy, an economic power and the pre-eminent military power in the region clearly holds the mandate. Turkey has been too insular for quite some time, and she has to remember that she was once the Ottoman Empire. Under her rule, the Middle East really was not as unstable as it is now. In fact, the Ottomans even allowed local sultans and sheiks to have local administrative control, under Istanbul's blessings, of course.

We see what happens when there is no great power in the region taking an active role. It cannot be Saudi Arabia because of its polarizing effect, and it would only antagonize the Shia communities. It cannot be Iran because of its polarizing effect and it would antagonize Sunni communities. It cannot be Israel. It has to be Turkey. Turkey has both Sunni and Shia, Turkey is a democracy, Turkey is ruled by law, and has an active human rights groups within.

I honestly believe that under Turkish protection, Syria can recoup and rebuild from ashes, religious minorities will be protected , and violence may be inhibited (else face the wrath of the Turkish Armed Forces).

Turkey has done more than any nation in the middle east when it comes to caring for the victims of the Syrian and Iraqi theater. Not many people know that Turkey has taken in and cared for over 3 million refugees. I hope that Turkey can take up a more active role.

Conquering is something of the past and wont sit well with the local people and the majority of our people i think. What Targon said is a better idea, and imo Turkey should only commit once equal UN/US support is given, not just mere support in words and some air support here and there. We are in it together or not.

Though what you have written is certainly correct, we shouldnt forget one of the causes that led to the downfall of the Ottoman empire; nationalism. As long as those people don't have the will to live under Ankara's rule, they will be no good for Turkey, no matter how good our intention is or our rule was during the Ottoman empire. Turkey hasnt gotten rid yet of some internal problems, so those should be main priority. Plus i think more and more Turks now look warmer to increase ties with the Turkic world, which is way more important.

Can Kurds and Shia's work as ground troops to finish off IS together with US air support?

Turkey, GCC and friendly Arab countries need to develop a Sunni resistance against IS in Sunni areas of Iraq and Syria.

Lets say Kurds, Shia militias and Sunni resistance can suffice as ground troops to beat IS. When IS is finished, I propose that a joint Turkish, GCC and Arab League peace keeping force (read Armies) should take over the Sunni areas of Iraq and Syria to ensure that Kurds do not take over Sunni Arab areas and Shia's don't massacre Sunni like they did before. The PKF should stay there indefinitely, essentially it will be a remake of Ottoman empire, but with joint Turkish and Arab partnership. This is also to ensure that Iraq and Syria survive as states and Sunni rights are ensured in these states.

The mistake for Turkey and GCC govt. was to use or tolerate religious extremism as a geopolitical tool. Just like it was not a good idea in Afghanistan, so it was not in Iraq or Syria. To be fair, the US learned from its mistake in Afghanistan and did not actively support religious extremism in Syria, but unfortunately the GCC govts. did not learn it seems. I can understand Turkey making a mistake as this is first time they are facing a situation like this.

But they should be backed with American, British Special Forces and along with American Drones and Air power and Gunships.

Turkey has the most powerful conventional military in the middle east. ISIS will die like rats once the Turks are unleashed upon them.
