Pakistan shot down around 15-20 Russian Su's during the Afghan war and that is when they were much more powerful (USSR), yet there was no official war. Russia is all talk and intimidation like the US it can only bully weak countries like Georgia or Ukraine. A war with Turkey will immediately lead them to lose the Black Sea which will deny them any attempt to launch a ground invasion of Turkey. Due to Turkey's more strategic geographical location and military concentration - Turkey can easily gain superiority with or without NATO.

Contrary to the popular belief, USSR was a little more then a paper tiger during 1980s and Gorbachev was a coward. But times change.

Lets not foolishly assume that Vladimir Putin lacks the spine for a major conflict. He is a former KGB agent and he also have a good grasp of military operations. Under his leadership, Russia have successfully annexed Chechnya and South Ossetia (from Georgia) during two separate conflicts. In addition, Russia is preventing a breakthrough for Ukrainian regime against Ukrainian rebels. Moreover, Russia is also protecting Assad's regime in Syria from heavy odds.

Turkey have gotten away with a single event but a second misadventure is ill-advised.
