Pakistani Army not only killed the Bengali civilians, but also they killed some of their Bengali officers. In a research, it was proven that the army killed 43 of their own officers who were Bengali. Some of these Bengali officers were in the rank of Major and Lieutenant colonel.

Pak army started their killing from 25th march, 1971. But the planning started a long ago. As the plan was top secret and confidential, most of the Pakistani army officers didn’t know about this killing before 25th march when the authority officially ordered them to eliminate the Bengali officers.

In this post, I am recounting how 3 High ranked Pakistani military officials who refused to kill Bengali officers. They instead, left East Pakistan before the massacre took part.

They are :
  1. Vice Admiral Syed Mohammad Ahsan (3 star general of Pakistan navy)
  2. Lieutenant General Sahabzada Yaqub Khan (3 star general of Pakistan Army) and
  3. Air Commodore Mohammad Zafar Masud ( 1 star general of Pakistan Air Force )
I am writing about them serially and their contribution to avoid the killings.

Vice Admiral Syed Mohammad Ahsan was the former Chief of Pakistan navy. He was a very close person of President Ayub khan and was also a finance minister in that time. After ending his time as a naval chief, he then promoted to the Governor of East Pakistan. in 1970, Awami league won the majority part in the election and Yahya khan refused that. From that moment, Pakistan Army was planning to take military actions in Bangladesh.

Syed Mohammad Ahsan researched and analyzed the situation. He had very good relationship with the Awami league leaders and assured them to help them in this situation. So In February 1971, Admiral Ahsan attended the meeting with President yahya khan and offered his suggestions not to take any military actions in Bangladesh.

In that meeting, he passed a very tough time. That meeting was attended by people with anti-Bengali atmosphere and Admiral Ahsan was the only man who supported the Bengalis. He continuously asked Yahya to handle the situation politically. That meeting made him much unpopular in the Pakistan military. The generals accused him of becoming the broker (dalal) of the Bengalis.

In February 22th, he attended the last meeting with the Generals. Again he tried to convince them to handle the situations politically. But he failed. Disheartened and disappointed by his colleagues, Ahsan Resigned from his post and immediately left Bangladesh in 7th march, 1971. He knew that a planned massacre was coming. He didn’t talk a single sentence before the independence of Bangladesh. After the independence, he said that he tried several times to stop the military actions. But nobody paid any heed about his opinion. He was the only supporter for the 75 million Bengali.

Lieutenant General Sahabzada Yaqub Khan was the governor of East Pakistan and he attended that meeting with Admiral Ahsan with the same opinion. He was also against the military actions and tried to handle it politically. But he also failed. He was the only Pakistany army general who supported the Bengalis. He was highly respected by the Bengali officers of Pakistan army. He was very much fond of Bangladeshi culture and learned Bangla as well.

In that meeting, he was fierce ( হিংস্র) and strictly gave his opinion against any type of military actions in Bangladesh. He had done a lot of jobs when the Cyclone hit the country in 1970 and after that he attained much popularity among the Bangalis.

As he failed to handle the situation, he quickly gave his resignation letter and posted back to Pakistan. He retired from Army in 1972 and didn’t take participation in the war in 1971.

Air Commodore Mohammad Zafar Masud. This 1 star Pakistan air force officer was really talent and he was popular in the military. He was supposed to be the next Chief of Air staff ( head of air force). In the meeting with president Yahya khan, he continuously argued with the generals and told that the political situation of Bangladesh can not be solved by taking military actions. But nobody heard about his opinion. He was the only air force officer in that meeting to support the Bengali. After the surprising resignation of Vice admiral Ahsan, he was given the order to command the miliatry in Bangladesh. He tried his best to stop the military actions. But he failed.

He was shocked when Pakistan army started the massacre at 25th march. He immediately tried to contact Yahya Khan, but he again failed. That time, Zafar became very angry. He quickly flew to Pakistan and tried to contact with Yahya . Again he failed. Being angry and frustrated, he suddenly resigned his position and took retirement from Pakistan air force. He tried to say what is happening in Bangladesh to the newspapers, but the senior ranking officers of Pakistan Army ordered him to silence, he could not break his silence before the end of the war.

I dont these officers saw them as Bengalis but Pakistanis whose constitutional rights that were being violated

Awami League won the elections fair and square.

Instead of giving them their rightful place, the military started a brutal crackdown. The military then humiliated itself by surrendering to India and giving up their country. Cowards!

The military has been humiliating itself doing the same atrocities on the repeat since 1971 tragedy. Its us Pakistanis who were stupid. We now know what an ugly villain establishment is.

same mistake all over again....

these idiots never learn

One of the only times, pak army only did something decent was between 92-94 period.

Napak Paleet Bhouj has still learnt any lessons. It is rinse and
repeat of 1971, that time it was Awami league and now it is PTI.
The end result was utter humiliation for Napak Bhouj and also lost
half the Country.

The famous mitti Masud. Kudos to him for his decision to sacrifice his career and not let the army use PAF to kill civilians . He was in his way to becoming the next CAS. One of the most able leaders PAF has produced. Man of culture as well. Loved classical music . Married to a German but never forgot his Pakistani roots

Thanks for posting this.

On a personal note - my grandfather, who was in the military, also had to flee after March 26, 1971. He was caught, but his superior officer let him go so that he could join with his family, instead of killing him.

There were other good hearted folks within the Pakistan army apart from the senior leaders you noted. But unfortunately they were overwhelmed by braindead power hungry Generals. Had it not been the case, we would have been a united and powerful country.

East pakistan was going to separate sooner or later regardless that operation had happened or not.
There was no way both wings would have agreed upon a single constitution.Loose arrangements like a confederation were already refused by Bengali elite.. if Pakistanis wanted power so did the Bengalis.

Though yes process of new demarcations should have been part of a political process for all that but kgb/cia had other plans, India initiated a war and that collapsed the equilibrium and political actors from both sides tried to cling to their respective power circles..Bhutto and mujeeb are the major two actors of 71 besides army. ..Can't clap with one hand .when two want to be PM if of one state and there is no constitutional guideline....each party has to be aboard the reconciliation process for a way forward and that didn't happen ..

Faujeets live in another reality 😂😂

1971 all over again

Army Pride , blinded by it

Can't accept the obvious reality and truth

Continued effort to ensure the 1952 Army Manual and teachings continue

Lesson is lost , People make a country , not Pride of being in Army

If the Bond between people and Army is severed , the war is already lost

@saif

Hopefully we will be able to restore our good relation with Pakistan if the govt. in Bangladesh is changed.

Hopefully, not. And Hasina bibi will rule for ever

Bdesh change its sentinent? To pak? Some ppl need to snap out of it. The whole system of pak is completely wrong, literally ppl and society live for and to serve pak military in any way which may not bad. Yet their establishment has consistently betrayed their country and their ppl.

The pak army only did one very decent thing which is '92-'94 I can't fault them, it was very commendable.

Why is it that non-Muslim Bengalis, Biharis, UPis, Punjabis, and Sindhis can coexist harmoniously, but when they convert to Islam, conflicts and violence among them often arise?
Could it be that teaching children to hate based on religion leads to the propagation of hatred within different sects of Islam and also fuels ethnic animosity?

They didn't kill any officers or troops, if they did we wouldn't have Bangali officers who remained loyal to Pak and ended in imprisonment and later retiring and settling in Pakistan.
On the flip side, several Bangali heavy regiments massacred and even raped families of west Pak officers and troops.
An interesting story is of Ikram Sehgal, whose mother was Bangali, father Pakistani and was caught and almost killed by his father's regiments.

Thankfully some sense prevailed, and he was handed over to indian army. The man escaped indian mil jail.. and wrote a book bout it.

Have you noticed about cunts (excuse my language) like “surjeet Singh’s” who whine in our jails when caught as spies and have Bollywood movies made about them. As soon as they go back to India they proudly proclaim themselves as spies 😂. Allah ka shukar our “spies” don’t do the same. They know what they signed up for and were honest with the country even after the end.
