Travel Risk Map 2019: Iran as safe as the UK and Slovenia, Denmark and Switzerland among world's least dangerous countries

Iran is as safe as the UK when it comes to security, according to a new interactive map showing the risk level around the world.

The 2019 Travel Risk Map, launched by global risk experts International SOS in collaboration with Control Risks, shows the danger level in each country and territory based on the current threat posed to travellers by political violence (including terrorism, insurgency, politically motivated unrest and war), social unrest (including sectarian, communal and ethnic violence) and violent and petty crime.

Factors such as the robustness of the transport infrastructure, the state of industrial relations, the effectiveness of the security and emergency services and the country’s susceptibility to natural disasters are also taken into consideration.

The map lists five categories of risk: insignificant, low, medium, high and extreme.

Very few countries manage to make it into the “insignificant” bracket; in Europe, only Luxembourg, Denmark, Slovenia, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Greenland are put in this category.

The majority of European countries are deemed low risk, including the UK; as are Iran, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Uzbekistan in the Middle East.

Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand are all low risk too.

“Extreme” risk countries are almost exclusively in Africa and the Middle East, including Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Libya, South Sudan and Somalia.

The map was released in conjunction with the Ipsos MORI Business Resilience Trends Watch 2019 report. The latter shows that a significant number of business decision-makers – 43 per cent – expect travel risks to rise in 2019.

Although some 47 per cent think risks have increased over the past year, this represents a 16 per cent decrease from 2017, when 63 per cent said risk had increased.

Alongside the Travel Risk Map, a Medical Risk Map and Road Safety Risk Map for 2019 have been launched.

The medical ratings are given by assessing a range of health risks and mitigating factors, including: infectious diseases, environmental factors, the standard and availability of local emergency medical and dental care, access to quality pharmaceutical supplies, the requirement for medical evacuation and cultural, language or administrative barriers.

The UK, along with most of Western and Central Europe, is designated “low” risk status.

  • Iraq
  • Libya

Great stuff. Proof that if you focus on your internal security by having the appropriate laws, administrative system and backed by firm iron fist ~ in case of Iran the police, IRGC, Pasbaran, Basiji you can have secure safe country. And this is despite having USA, Israel, GCC, KSA trying to tear away at the country.

No success for 'foreign hands' here? Pakistani' need to learn from this.

Good job, but it is a bit unfair for Pakistan. Except few spots, Pakistan is totally safe. Although I do endorse Iran for keeping their security tight in Iran despite of their hostility with US Israel KSA and many other countries who aren't able to cause mishap in Iran.

Pakistan is “totally safe”?

A part of the country is run by tribal warlords with ties to terrorist groups. Terrorist attacks happen quite frequently. Other parts of Pakistan have very little security in terms of adequate law enforcement. Sunni extremists attack shiites. The country is poor and lacking proper funding (just had to get an emergency loan from Saudi Arabia).

I wouldn’t go to Pakistan if someone paid me. I can see why it would be high risk country to Western tourists.

Iran is proodf that internal security is entirely contingent on efficacy of the state concerned. This whole "foreign hand" excuse that is repeated in Pakistan like mantra is a cop out. It is a excuse plain simple that covers up the failed policies and incompetence of Pakistan state. The first question when you hear "foreign hand" is ask how did the foreign hand get up my a*ss in the first place?

Iran has had USA, Israel, KSA, GCC and most of the west - that equals to the most lethal combination you can have rearing to tear Iran apart. By rights the "foreign hand" should have by now gone up the Iranian posterior and come out of it's mouth. But despite Iran being in same geography as us and facing similiar problems [Baloch/Afghans] we have to ask why Iran is as safe as UK but Pakistan is considered one of the most dangerous?

The reason is Iran has invested [pre Shah/post Shah] in internal security and relentlessly extended the writ of the state. But note one thing. While Pakistan is busy buying warships to patrol the high seas the Iranians do with small boats. That exposes the mislaid priorities in Pakistan.

Bro, regardless of our political differences, US and Pakistanis never talk badly of each other on this forum and I have stated multiple times that an average US citizen is pretty nice person to hang out with and I'm talking of my life experience. He is either a Gangadeshi false flagger or of that origin.

The map has the lowest risk countries correct but the rest is stupid beyond belief, Brazil medium risk? Lmao! Brazil has the 13th highest murder rate per capita in the world and the sixth highest in the world for violent crime. How very 'medium risk'......

Oh and this was the latest data on where women are most likley to be killed in domestic violence.

The Americas came second as a continent.

I do however agree Iran is very safe, much of that is down to the people and culture. Beautiful country.

I have family who visit Iran every summer duh they drive to Pakistan every year via Iran and the internal security is prob the best in the region compare Iranian Balochistan to ours its day and night here some vids of family and friends who do the drive every year hope do the same when my plans fro UK to Japan trip by road is realized.I mean the UK and US have warnings not to visit South Azerbaijan province and Balochistan province but seeing vids and photos of my realtives trips through those areas shows the opposite again it wasnt always like that the 1980s and 1990s you had the Iran Iraq War and the Nagoro Karabakh Conflict so it made those regions unsafe now its safe thanks to strict internal security policies by Iran, Pakistan should do the same
