This is my second article about tragedy families and I have selected one of the best known political families of India the Nehru Gandhi’s. This family has been dominant in Indian politics since her independence in 1947 and has been the major power players in Indian National Congress. This family has given three Prime Ministers to India and still continues to be a major player in the country’s politics. However like some other families this family has also seen some very tragic moments and has been hard hit by tragedies.

Sanjay Gandhi:

Sanjay Gandhi was the younger son of Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi. He was born on December 14, 1946. His education was done in Welham Boys School, Don School in Dera Don and at St. Columbas School, Delhi. He never attended college however did an apprenticeship at Rolls Royce in Crew England. His personal interests included sports cars and also obtained a pilot’s license.

It is believed that Sanjay had an immense influence over his mother and at that time the Prime Minister of India. He is believed to have used this influence to gain personal benefits while she was in power. It is believed that Sanjay Gandhi had a role in the controversies affecting the Indira Gandhi government of the time such as The Maruti Udyog, the Emergency of 1975-77, Jamia Masjid Slum and Family Planning. He was widely tipped as the successor to the Indira Gandhi and was been polished for that role by the mother.

Unfortunately Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash on June 23, 1980 near Safdarjung Airport near Delhi when he lost control of the plane he was flying. He left behind a widow Maneka Gandhi and a son Varun Gandhi.

Indira Gandhi:

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917. Her father was the Jawaharlal Nehru the first Prime Minister of Independent India. After finishing school in 1934-35 she joined the Shantiniketan a school set up by Rabindranath Tagore. Then she went to England and studied at the Somerville College, Oxford. There she frequently met with Feroze Gandhi and ultimately married him in 1942.

She returned to India in 1941 and became involved in the Indian freedom movement. During her father’s government in 1950’s she unofficially served him as personal assistant. After her father’s death she was appointed member of Rajya Sabha the upper house of parliament. She became a member of Lal Bahadur Shastri’s government as Minister of Information and Broadcasting. After the death of Shastri she became the Prime Minister of India. She was the prime minister of the India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984 a total of fifteen years. She was India's first and to date only female prime minister.

His tenure has many highs and lows however India’s victory over Pakistan in 1971 perhaps was the best moment of her political career. In June 1984 Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale's Sikh group occupied the Golden Temple in Punjab. In response to that Indian Army launched operation Blue Star. The State of Punjab was closed to International Media, the Human Rights groups and other groups during the operation. Sikh Devotees were also not allowed to enter the temple. After this operation there was great anger expressed by the Sikhs against the government of Indira Gandhi. On October 31, 1984 two Sikh guards on duty to protect the Prime Minister opened fire on her killing her. She left behind a son Rajiv Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi:

Rajiv Gandhi was born on August 20, 1944. He was the elder son of Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi. Rajiv’s early education was at Welham Boys' School and later The Don School. Then he was sent to London in 1961 to study A-levels. He was then offered a place at the Trinity College, Cambridge to study engineering. Though he attended the college until 1965 he left without obtaining the degree. In 1966 he was offered a place at the Imperial College London. He again left Imperial College after a year without a degree. During his stay in London he met Antonia (Sonia) Maino hailing from Italy. Later they married in 1968 in India.

Initially Rajiv stayed away from politics however after the death of his younger brother he was persuaded to enter politics. In 1981 he contested to elections and became a member of the Lok Sabha. After the assassination of his mother he was nominated for the post of Prime Minister by Indian National Congress. He became the youngest Prime Minister of India when he took oath in 1984.

Like all politicians his tenure had a number of ups and downs however it was the involvement of India in the Sri Lankan conflict that would result in his assassination. On May 21, 1991 he was at a public meeting in support of Congress candidate at Sriperumbudur a village approximately 30 miles from Madras, Tamil Nadu when a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber blew her-self very close to him. He left behind a widow Sonia Gandhi, a son Rahul Gandhi and a daughter Priyanka Gandhi.

One important point to note is that although all the members of the family carry the name Gandhi they are not in any way associated with the Mahatma Gandhi. They carry this surname because of Feroze Gandhi with whom Indira Gandhi was married.

Presently Sonia Gandhi the widow of Rajiv Gandhi is leading the Congress and so the role of the Gandhi family continues in Indian Politics. Perhaps this family’s destiny is tied with Indian politics however one hopes that they do not go through another tragedy and continue to play their role in a peaceful manner.

Yes, that's surprising to a lot of people outside India. One does keep hearing from conspiracy theorists that it was a trick by Nehru to attach a well known and respected name to his daughter's family to advance their political career. They say the guy was actually Feroze Ghandi (a Parsi name) but changed his name's spelling on Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi's insistence.

Another conspiracy theory suggests that Feroze was actually a Muslim but had to adopt a Hindu/Parsi sounding name due to '47 riots and due to Nehru/Gandhi pressure.

Yet another one suggests that Sanjay Gandhi was actually the son of a Muslim Congress politician and not Feroze. And that Sanjay and Maneka's wedding was held at this guy's house.:)

There is also a rumor that Indira and Feroz were close to a divorce but Feroz's heart attack brought them back together. Only god knows what is true and what not.

Yeah. You never know about these things.

There is a another theory that Indira Gandhi's assassination was the result of CIA plot as she was not someone they can handle/dictate and her death has resulted a big blow to India's progress and weak leadership and collision govt has caused a huge damage to India.

The same is with Rajeev, a CIA plot. These are the conspiracy theories or truth who knows.

Feroze Khan’s father, Nawab Khan, was a Muslim, and mother was a Persian Muslim,Jawaharlal Nehru did not approve of the inter-caste marriage for political reasons. At this juncture, according to one story, Mahatma Gandhi intervened and adopted Feroze Khan, gave him his last name (family name/caste name) and got the name of Feroz Khan changed to Feroz Gandhi by an affidavit in England. Thus, Feroze Khan became Feroze Gandhi.another version is Feroze's mothers surname was Ghandi (not Gandhi) a Persian name and he was asked to adopt that as his surname to fool people.

Also, It is found that in over 90% cases of plots/ murders or conspiracies, only the main beneficiaries was/ were found guilty.……………

Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi married in 1968, following which she moved into the house of her mother-in-law and then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.

Sanjay Gandhi died in an "Plane Crash" on 23 June 1980 near Safdarjung Airport in New Delhi. During his lifetime he was widely expected to succeed his mother as head of the Indian National Congress, but following his early death in a plane crash his older brother Rajiv became their mother's heir.

Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, was "Assassinated" on 31 October 1984.

the former head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), K. S. Sudarshan, accused Sonia Gandhi of plotting Indira's assassination. Sudarshan claimed that after Operation Blue Star, intelligence agencies feared a revolt by Indira's Sikh bodyguard Satwant Singh, and he was about to be replaced, but it was not done on the orders of Sonia Gandhi. Sudarshan also alleged that after the shootout, the bleeding Indira was intentionally taken to AIIMS hospital rather than Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, which was nearer her house, on orders of Sonia Gandhi in order to waste time. He further asked why a probe was not being done in order to find out the truth.

Rajiv Gandhi, the sixth Prime Minister of India, occurred as a result of a "Suicide Bombing" in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, India on 21 May, 1991.

Rajesh Pilot died on June 11, 2000 in a "Car Accident" near Jaipur. he lost the election for the post of the "Congress president" to Sitaram Kesri, but kept himself in the first line of Congress leaders.

Madhavrao Scindia died in a "Plane Crash" in Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh on 29th September 2001. Scindia's political role and influence within the Congress party grew rapidly and he was seen as a potential prime ministerial candidate. His tragic demise in what was reported as a plane "crash" demolished many hopes.

(Note: Rajesh Pilot and Madhavrao Scindia were the number 2 and 3 respectively in congress in early 2000 and then Remote Controlled Dr Manmohan Singh became Indian Prime Minister in 2004.)

We discuss conspiracy theories on the basis of ‘logical arguments’ only and I remember, few street people in India told us around 7-8 years before, while having tea on a small tea shop, while discussing why Jamima Khan kicked Imran Khan but not Sonia did the same with Rajiv Gandhi? And they argued, if Sanjay Gandhi might not have died in 1980 then he could become Indian Prime Minister in 1984 and Sonia Gandhi might be said to be a wife of a senior Pilot only as Rajiv Gandhi was just a professional Pilot. and no western would marry with a south Asian if he is an engineer, doctor, Pilot or a cricketer and then she would move to India to live in India. Western girl are quite comfortable in dating different nationals while living in a Western country only, no more than that (also South Asian countries weren’t developed enough in 80s and in early 90s as compare to right now…………..)

We call current Indian government as Manmohan government but I don’t think Dr Manmohan Singh would be selecting even 10 out of 542 candidates for Congress for parliamentary elections. He gave ticket to none of ministers he lead and they are ministers because they are grateful for that to Sonia Gandhi, not the Mr Singh. And when Mr Rahul Gandhi will find that the right time has come, just within next 2-3 years, Dr Singh will leave his PM seat for him without any noise, a common sense. You need to be at least over 18 year old for voting in India, but even an Indian kid knows that Mr Anna is right to say that he will sit in front of house of Sonia Gandhi to get a powerful Lokpal in India as everyone knows Dr M Singh himself is just nothing………….

Similarly, if Sanjay Gandhi could become Indian PM in 1984 then it could be Varun Gandhi in line for post of Indian PM right now, not the Rahul. Also, everyone sitting in the Indian parliament knows that even if Rajesh Pilot and Madhavrao Scindia were just number 2 and 3 in congress in early 2000, they were going to kick Sonia if they could become Indian Prime Minister in 2004 and then sons of either Rajesh Pilot or Mr Sindhia could be in line of top politics, not the Rahul Gandhi who would then give full control to his mother Sonia. And about Dr Singh, he is just nothing expect a man who can do the work as a PM in a better way and would leave his position when he is told to do so by Sonia Gandhi. Dr Singh just cant have good number of votes to win a election on his own. Many old people used to say in India in early 90s that after Indira Gandhi, none of her Heir was going to be Indian Prime Minister if Indira Gandhi might not have been killed, the women who did much for India. The reason, a ‘Political Kira’ like V.P. Singh missed to organize a bomb blast on his own family and couldn’t earn local sympathy which Congress earned after assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, what people used to say in early 90s. (removing Gandhi's one by one was also very important to maintain sympathy of common Indian public for Gandhi family.) But Sonia Gandhi was absolutely right for not trying for post of PM in early 90s, as, first she was not going to get full majority as a foreign born person and second, there was an environment in India in early 90s that foreign companies were buying all the Indian companies one by one, newspapers like Rashtriya Sahara/ Times of India and many other Indian newspapers were openly saying that those foreign companies were capable enough to make India financial slave so it was good that Mr N Rao and Dr M Singh would be put on front to do that, not the foreign born Sonia Gandhi herself? But things changed by late 90s and even BJP government continued on the policy of open market and then Mr Pilot and Mr Scindia, the number 2 and 3, were removed in early 2000 and then remote controlled Mr Singh was then put on the seat of PM in 2004 as a successful person on his policy of Open Market.

those of Gandhis who were patriots are dead and now we have traitors like Sonia/Rahul to handle. and on the top of that, this man is a rapist also :hang2:
