Hizbul Mujahideen operational commander Riyaz Naikoo, who took over the reins after the death of Burhan Wani, has been killed after a prolonged gunbattle between security forces and terrorists in Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Wednesday.

Riyaz Naikoo was the key commander of the banned terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen. He had been on the run for over eight years before being killed in south Kashmir on Wednesday.

Sources said Riyaz Naikoo was visiting his aged parents in the village for Ramzan when intel sources got a tip-off on his presence in the area. The forces then launched the operation and trapped him.

A joint team of Indian Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a cordon and search operation in the Beighbora village on Tuesday night that turned into a gunbattle.

On Tuesday night, the "intelligence input" gave specific details about the whereabouts of Naikoo. Multiple fields and railway tracks were dug up after receiving the inputs about possible tunnels or underground hideouts.

At 9 am, contact was established with the trapped terrorists and a firefight ensued. The search operation was called of at 1 pm on Wednesday but the cordon remained.

As the gunbattle continued into Wednesday afternoon, the forces blew up a house in Awantipora in which Riyaz Naikoo was suspected to be trapped. The forces used around 40 kg IED to blow up the house.

Riyaz Naikoo carried a bounty of Rs 12 lakh on his head before being killed on Wednesday. Naikoo became the de facto chief of Hizbul Mujahideen after the death of Burhan Wani, the poster boy of militancy in Kashmir Valley, in July 2016.

the original heading has the word terrorist commander but i changed it to freedom fighter respecting pdf policy..this man seems to be a big fish as the internet is snapped across kashmir again...there are some more fighters trapped...the number of deaths will be known only after the end of the encounter.

Sounds like standard bull crap to me. Some civilians will be body bagged and Pakistani rupees will be found on their persons along with a JeM loyalty points card. The usual face saving murder of innocent civilians just a day after several Indian paramilitaries have been expertly gutted and skinned alive. The freedom fighters are gone, vanished into thin air like assassins.

According to a J&K Police spokesperson the operation was launched late Tuesday night and heavy firing is currently on as forces target the house in which the terrorist is believed to be hiding

Srinagar:

A top terrorist commander has been pinned down by security forces conducting an anti-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Awantipora area.

According to a J&K Police spokesperson the operation was launched late Tuesday night and heavy firing is currently going on as security forces target the house in which the terrorist commander is believed to be hiding. Sources have said the terrorist is a high-ranking commander of terror group Hizbul Mujahideen and one of Kashmir's most wanted.

Sources have also said the commander and an accomplice have both been killed but officials have refused to confirm this. However, soon after the encounter started, mobile internet service was suspended in all 10 districts of Kashmir Valley.

"Contact established in the third operation at Awantipur. Top terrorist commander is trapped. Exchange of fire on. Details shall follow," J&K Police tweeted at 9.07 am. Minutes earlier the police tweeted: "Third operation launched by Awantipur Police last night on a specific input too is in progress at Beigpora Awantipora. Senior officers monitoring since last night".

According to police the terrorist being targeted is a key figure in recruiting locals into terrorism and is also involved in a number of others cases, including the killing of special police officers and threating J&K Police officials into resignation.

In 2018 terror threats and attacks on SPOs (special police officers) led to a number of resignations, as well as those of police officers in violence-hit Shopian and Pulwama districts.

The real threat comes from foreign terror outfits like the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Over the past month at least 22 members of the country's security forces, including army officers, have been killed in the Kashmir Valley. This sudden spike in encounters, coming amid reports of infiltration by highly-trained terrorists from Pakistan, poses a major security challenge even as the country fights the COVID-19 crisis.

On Sunday two senior Army officers - a colonel and a major - were among five security personnel killed in action during an encounter in J&K's Kupwara district. A sub-inspector and two soldiers also lost their lives. On Monday, there was an attack on a CRPF (central reserve police force) team in the same area that led to three personnel being killed.

J&K Police have said that three separate anti-militancy operations have been launched in the south Kashmir area. This morning one terrorist was killed during a joint operation by the Army and police

Why do you call him a terrorist when he is only fighting for his freedom? Terror is being imposed on the Kashmir people by daily Indian murders, kidnappings, tortures, rapes, abuses etc.

.
I sometimes wonder whether kashmir freedom movement has 100 percent support from people all across kashmir...because many of these encounters are carried out by kashmir police who are kashmiri muslims themselves...it proves there are good number of people who are pro india in kashmir.

Yes, that may be the case. But no official announcement yet from J&K Police or Army.

As per the news, he is dead but we need to wait for official confirmation.
