Government has postponed the release of the film till February 3
LAHORE / LAHORE/KARACHI:
In a recent turn of events, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has postponed the release of Zindagi Tamasha till February, 3, 2020.

According to sources, the ministry has decided that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) will once again hold a board members meeting to review the film in which a representative of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and a representative of the ministry will also participate.

Sources have also confirmed that the religious party has cancelled its protest against the film that was scheduled to be held Wednesday. “Film will only be cleared if the members of the religious party and government officials approve of the content,” a source told The Express Tribune.

Following this, respective censor boards including the central and provincial have also been instructed to delay the certification process till February.

The producers of the film could not be reached for a comment till the filing of this report.

Legal stand

Earlier on Monday, director of Khoosat Films Private Limited, and Sarmad Khoosat’s father, Irfan Ali Khoosat, filed a petition in a Lahore court against TLP for attempting to ‘interfere in the smooth running, public screening and release’ of upcoming film Zindagi Tamasha.

After recent threats, some of which the filmmaker also shared on his social media, the petition was filed seeking relief from the irrelevant pressure coming from parties having nothing to do with the release of the film.

The petition argues that the “concerned quarters have allowed the defendant to release his film, hence the defendant is not entitled to interfere in the smooth running affairs of release.” Civil Judge Ziaur Rahman issued a notice to all respondents to appear before the court to present their arguments on January 22, 2020.

Irfan has specified in the petition that there is nothing objectionable in the film —which could damage the reputation of any religious party or group. He explained that by releasing Zindagi Tamasha, Khoosat Films aims to “bring the soft image of the society among the public at large, to reduce the stress from the minds of peoples of the country and to promote the positivity in the society”.

The petition has named the Sindh Film Censor Board, Punjab Film Censor Board and the Markazi Film Censor Board as respondents. It has also clarified that the censor boards were “mere (proforma) defendants and the plaintiff has not claimed any relief against them”.

The petition was heard by the judge today, while Irfan also filed for an interim injunction from the court under Rules 1 (cases in which temporary injunction may be granted) and 2 (injunction to restrain repetition or continuance of breach) of Order 39 read with Section 151 of the Code of Civil Procedure.

It is pertinent to mention here that Sarmad had earlier requested the prime minister to help him with the release of his film, following which he has brought the matter in court.

On the other hand cinema houses across the country are confused about the release of the film, since the filmmaker also spoke about having to withdraw the release.

Sarmad had also cancelled all the meet and greets that were supposed to be held in Karachi yesterday.

Zindagi Tamasha (Image via Twitter @KhoosatSarmad)

If you are someone who is interested in Pakistani media, Sarmad Khoosat is a name that will continue to pop up in terms of quality. His upcoming film, Zindagi Tamasha (or Circus of Life), is ready to address some tough social topics. It will be released in Pakistan on January 24, 2020.

While Pakistanis wait to view the film in theaters, Zindagi Tamasha has already screened at the Busan International Film Festival 2019. It ended up becoming the first Pakistani film to win the Kim Jiseok Award. As I said, Sarmad Khoosat’s name is synonymous with quality.

From what is revealed in the official trailer, I can’t wait to watch his upcoming release.

The trailer below has English subtitles, in case you were wondering.

The official description reads:

Zindagi Tamasha (#CircusOfLife) is an intimate portrait of a family as well as a scorching political commentary on the little gods on this earth who police private passions.

According to The Express Tribune, actor Arif Hasan plays Rahat, a naat khwaan who is well-respected in the old city of Lahore. He is highly revered for being a devout Muslim. For his admirers, he is someone who can do no wrong.

However, as alluded to in the trailer, a certain action by Rahat is deemed unforgivable by society after a video of his goes viral.

You can tell the trailer is deliberately keeping certain plot details a mystery. But it is clear the film won’t be shying away from a number of controversial topics including gender stereotypes, queer representation, child molestation, and religious beliefs (to name a few).

The official soundtrack also some additional scenes to help get an idea about the film.

Of course, certain scenes from the film have been censored by the board. But Khoosat is glad about the censors not being too harsh and limiting the type of narrative he wanted to tell through this project.

Fingers crossed, an uncensored version is picked up by Netflix or some other streaming service.

Such things are usually a publicity stunt , atleast this happens in India.
Such controversies start just before the release of the film and die down soon after

This is a different case.

This is a different case.
Same happened with the movie Padmavat here. But after the release no one care but movie made 200+ crore. But as i said , i am not aware of the ground realities in Pakistan

Trailer linked in above thread. Film was reviewed and approved by relevant boards. Just look at the trailer, you can tell it's a top quality film, coming from Pakistan too!

TLP, same party which ordered that the Army Chief and Prime Minister be removed or killed, protested and issued threats to the director of the film and the team.

For context, second thread with trailer, discusses the content a bit.

Relevant insitutions have succumbed to this pressure by TLP, and the team which will review this film again will have a TLP representative... is this seriously some kind of a joke?

Ban the film!

Yes, ban the film, keep a blindfold around your eyes to the increasing child molestation, child marriages in Pakistan.

For some reason, your condemnations dissapear there.

Release onto netflix.

I want to see the film, want to see what is bothering these Mullahs so much.

It might be one of the best films as well to be released by Pakistan film industry quality wise.

Queer, Homosexuality, Gender stereotypes should not be included

Queer, Homosexuality, Gender stereotypes should not be included

No where it says homosexuality, you pathlogical liar.

It discusses queer represenation i.e. transgenders who we all know how are treated.

It talks about gender stereotypes in society, which we all know how bad are in Pakistan.

These things need to be discussed.

I talked in general

Okay, even in general, this film doesn't have homosexuality, and even generally queer representation, gender stereotypes, among other social issues need to be discussed.

I talked in general

Yeah yeah. Gender Roles according to Islam. Thats it

Not even close, unless you think expecting women to take brunt of heat, and still observe patience, is okay in Islam.
