Time to forget Kashmir

In life I've seen doing the right thing always sucks and the cons outweigh the pros, except for one little thing, you can sleep at night. It all depends how much you value that.

Exactly. Sound peaceful sleep at night. Ask this very question to thousands of your servicemen, security personnel and thousands of ordinary people who have borne the brunt of terrorist attacks - the case of rooster coming home to roost. Was/is it really worth it?

.
I agree. Do you really think the P.A. and ISI will ever permit a civilian government to pursue this course? They didn't in 1999, preferring to undermine Sharif's approaches to India by launching the Kargil war. What makes today different?

The current government hasn't done much but the previous governments all dabbled with this idea.

As far as military is concerned, Musharraf himself suggested this as a possibility before he started peddling his four point agenda. His reasons for being against the independence option in his last years of governance was more of a ask for more get something less type of approach. Thats why stuck to four point agenda.

Once the issue comes to the table, Pakistanis will accept it as it will be nobody's loss, nobody's gain and Kashmiri's would get what they asked for.

.
(Forget Pakistan for a second) That would be an injustice to the Kashmiri people, considering the fact that 66% of all people from Jammu & Kashmir want independence from India. Pakistanis can forget about Kashmir all they want, but the Kashmiri people won't forget the atrocities they have to face from India.

Sorry, but from where did you get this number of 66% want independence from India?

The most recent international opinion poll that was done was by Chatham House last year and India the no. who wanted independence was 43%. On the Pakistani side it was 44% and that is not included the Gilgit Baltistan side which would have inflated the numbers even higher who want independence on the Pakistani side.

Your connection to the whole matter? Supporting Kashmir's right to self-determination is not militancy, its fundamentally the vote - the plebiscite.

.
Can't say about Pakistan but Indian Politics is not tied around Kashmir there is no or little discussion about it freedom in other parts of India its only fight against so called terrorists from Pakistan which would be definitely won by India.

Its fight against Indian Terrorism in Country of Kashmir where Indian invader army is killing innocent Kashmiris in their own country.

In Pakistan there is a perception that if you talk peace with India they think you're weak. This has come up in Musharraf's time. If you see Musharraf during his early years he was a lot more comfortable talking nice to the Indians and now he prefers a tough approach.

Right now the lack of push for the independence option is more from the Indian side, it has to come up and show some preference towards a solution where it would lose Kashmiri territory, it has to be open to that idea like Pakistanis are.

NO. its otherway round. whenever there are talks the Indians start cursing own govt and call it weakness whereas NO such thing happened here. we had always been talking about the talks.

whenever there is some solution in sight the hindu extrmists groups from saffron sabotage the idea and block issuing of joint resolution at the last minute

I wonder where is Solomon and the Indians when we see such nature articles from the Indian commentators.

Well why wonder, its very logical, Solomon filled with his hate for Pakistan is not leaving any chance go by waste and for Indians, also understandable.

Two-thirds of Kashmiris in India want independence from India:

Most Kashmiris want independence, India imposes curfew | Asia-Pasific | World Bulletin

Most Kashmiris say they want freedom from India. Polling since 1995 has found at least two-thirds of those living in the Kashmir valley want independence. Some older Kashmiris still talk of joining Pakistan, but two-thirds of Kashmiris under age 30 mostly want independence.

Most Kashmiris in Azad Kashmir want to remain part of Pakistan. The Gilgit-Baltistan people are not Kashmiris, they do not consider themselves Kashmiris, & want to remain a part of Pakistan. There are ethnic/racial, as well as huge religious differences between the people in Gilgit-Baltistan & the people of Kashmir. The people of Gilgit-Baltistan are Ismaili (liberal) Shias, & do not want to live under the Sunnis in Kashmir, it is the Sunni leadership in J&K that wants to dominate the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, is forcing the issue here. In fact, Gilgit-Baltistan has already been converted into the 5th province of Pakistan, & the Gilgit-Baltistan people have already accepted that.

Chathamhouse poll, financed by none other than Gaddafi, says something else:

Independence:

Join Pakistan:

Join India:

T In fact, Gilgit-Baltistan has already been converted into the 5th province of Pakistan, & the Gilgit-Baltistan people have already accepted that.

By Annexing GB as a 5th province, the legibility of J&K as a disputed area by UN is meaningless. While I see that move as an understanding of the ground realities by Pakistan which ultimately pave the way of recognizing the current borders as international borders.

Only Sunni Muslims from valley want independence(?) or whatever, unfortunately they are not only Kashmiris living in Jammu and Kashmir.

The hate has died long back.

It is now the question of survival in a very competitive world!

It is just that when these niggles are raised, one floats back into history!

As you have correctly stated that Sunnis are not the only ones who are of Islam.

Kashmiris are basically Sufis.

There are also quite a sizeable numbers who are Shias.

And then there are the Hindus and Sikhs too!
