Ties with China good for region: Bangladesh PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said that strong China Bangladesh relations in various fields, including military co-operation, will have positive influence in the region.

The Bangladesh prime minister said the two countries have very strong historical relations and China is one of the important development partners of Bangladesh.

Hasina was talking to a high-level Chinese military delegation led by Deputy Chief of the General Staff of China Air Chief Marshal Ma Xiaotian when it called on her at her official residence in Dhaka.

She recalled the visit of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to China in 1950s and said Bangladesh always values its historical and friendly relations with China.

Referring to the military co-operation between the two countries, she said the relations need to be taken to a higher trajectory in order to move towards a strategic partnership.

The existing training co-operation between the two armies has significantly contributed to overall efficiency matrix of Bangladesh army, she said.

She extended thanks to Chinese government for support to renovation of the Khulna shipyard and Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory and said the visit of the delegation would strengthen co-operation and understanding between the defence forces of the two countries.

All of us, including me, are critical of AL's pro-indian policy. But, I can see this time with all her mental craziness the PM has not lost her vision. This AL govt is maintaining an almost equal friendly approaches towards countries like India, China, USA and Russia.

Among all these countries, only India is back stabbing BD by making an unjust demand for transits, when at the same time it is building dams that will be disastrous to Bangladesh. It is very interesting to see how the Indian politicans/bureaucrats whom we regard as the true descendents of Chanakkya behave so calleously and without a trace of politic they themselves are ruining the future bridges between these two countries. Notheworthy is these Chanakkyas are intentionally disowning their favorite AL.

On the other hand, Russia has signed contract to use its high-tech compressors to extract additional gas from fields that have been abandoned by others. Russia will also build a nuclear power station with two atomic reactors that will produce 2000 mW of power.

USA is always on our side in times of natural disasters. We are fond of disliking them. But USA is now willing to sell us their F-16 planes. However, BAF may be looking for F-35 planes after 2020. USA is a big market for our goods. We sell $3.5 billion worth of goods to that country. Only recently, the newly appointed US Ambassador to BD said about a strategic alliance between our two unequal countries.

Now comes China. Sk. Mujib was sent by the then Pakistan PM H.S. Suhrawardy to China for a Pakistan-China alliance. It was a fruitful mission. After 1971, it was President Zia who requested Chinese help to build up BD military. He sent a military attache to the BD embassy in Peking.　China started to help us since that time. Many of BD's equipments for BA, BAF and BN are from China.

In fact, BD remains today the largest destination of Chinese arms. AL govt followed a prudent policy of engaging with China intimately. China will keep on playing a big role in maintaining peace in this region. Without a Chinese help BD would have become a yes man of India. I am sure, all the govts in the future will keep on this relationship warm that was actually initited a few hundred years ago during Sultani period in Bengal.

I do not think they'd offer us F-35s, not even after 2020. It'd also be extremely expensive, and we aren't exactly Japan either (they recently selected it). Maybe we can look to J-XX from China, but none of that is certain.

As far as F-16s go, they are offering them now but they haven't disclosed exactly what blocks they'd be offering.

I agree about the AL part. This government has become a spineless lapdog of India. They even banned imports of small Japanese cars so that more small cars made in India come into the market. lol...

Now, another proverb, 'Udor Pindi Budor Ghare.' You keep on occupying Kashmir, and Pakistan tries to wrestle it away from you by force. You are responsible for all those wars that you have mentioned except one. I agree that you have helped BD in its just war against Pakistan in 1971. But, it is not that India loves freedom. India had its own geopolitical interest in breaking Pakistan into two, and we had our reason to fight against Pakistan. Our two countries fought together in 1971 because of the reasons above.

But, India wanted BD to be a toothless tiger. We did not accept the terms that India wnted to impose upon us. India was doing a mistaken calculation that anti-Pakistan means an automatic pro-India. India wanted to impose its will on us which we have rejected. Only because of India's high handed dealing with BD, the latter went after arming itself. It was the only way to get rid of Indian hegemony. Friendship must be won with mutual understanding and it cannot be imposed from one side. This is why Indian Chanakkyas are a bunch of fools. Hasina or no Hasina, BD is no friend of India.
