French have a bad record in Africa. More than a dozen countries were compelled to use French-issued CFA-Franc as their national currency, 50% of which was always placed in French treasury in Paris. France alone set the monetary policy for these countries (later, European Commercial Bank), until a few years ago. Many African leaders who tried to abolish this system were assassinated or overthrown in coups.
The CFA was pegged to the French-Franc and later, the Euro, for stability. But France regularly devalued the CFA in order to purchase African raw materials for ultra cheap prices. The opposite effect was felt in these African countries for whom it became more expensive to import.
Exchange rates fixed by France and ECB
1948: 1 CFA = 1.70 French Franc
1960: 1 CFA = 0.02 French Franc
1998: 1 CFA = 0.01 French Franc
1999: 1 CFA = 0.00152449 Euros
Many Africans managed to leave the system but many are still stuck in it. In 2020, some changes were made but the system still stands.
It is the most blatantly visible form of neo colonialism, and neither the UN nor the US or anyone else gives two shits about it.
The French are seen as villains in this part of the world, and rightfully so. So, their citizens tend to adopt in public everything opposite the French policies.
