Think tank: 92% of Afghans never heard of 9/11

Fewer than one in 10 Afghans are aware of the 9/11 attacks and their precipitation of the war in Afghanistan, says a study from an international think tank.

A report (PDF) from the International Council on Security and Development (ICOS) shows that 92 percent of those surveyed had never heard of the coordinated multiple attacks on US soil on September 11, 2001. It also shows that four in 10 Afghans believe the US is on their soil in order to "destroy Islam or occupy Afghanistan."

To be sure, the survey can't claim to be definitive: It only canvassed men, and relied primarily on respondents from Helmand and Kandahar, the two most war-torn provinces in the country. But the results nonetheless show that Western forces fighting insurgents in Afghanistan have largely failed to connect with the local population.

“We need to explain to the Afghan people why we are here, and both show and convince them that their future is better with us than with the Taliban,” ICOS lead field researcher Norine MacDonald said in a statement.

The survey also suggests that Afghans are skeptical of their own government's ability to protect them, and have little regard for the fledgling democratic institutions the country is building. Fully 43 percent could not name one positive aspect of democracy, and nearly two-thirds -- 61 percent -- said they didn't think Afghan forces would be able to keep up the fight against the Taliban if and when Western forces withdrew.

The ICOS study recommends a publicity campaign to explain to Afghans why foreign forces are fighting on their soil. The think tank also proposes a number of other initiatives meant to improve the image of foreign forces in the country, including having NATO forces deliver humanitarian aid where aid groups fear to travel, providing farmland to the poor, setting up women's councils, and "safe village convoys" which would see foreign troops escort villagers in dangerous rural areas.

ICOS has a permanent presence in Afghanistan and has been studying the nearly decade-long war's impact on Afghan society. The think tank has previously proposed that Afghanistan license the growing of opium. The group argues that eliminating the opiate trade from Afghanistan is virtually impossible due to its entrenched place in the culture. At the same time, Afghan farmers could earn money by selling opiates to painkiller manufacturers.

Opponents of the idea say that Afghanistan is not stable enough to develop a proper opium-manufacturing industry, and a licensing scheme would only encourage the sale of opium to heroin manufacturers.

well of course they don't
most of the people in AFG can't even read and write
there are no TVs and News Papers except in the big cities!

It doesn't take a genius to figure this out. They're living in their own world and you go there bomb the hell out of them. You might wanna bomb yourself since you created the mothe ******* Taliban.

.
It's their fault to let the rulers/government to provide safe haven for terrorists.

you might wanna grab a map and a history book and read about Afghanistan. I keep reading the most hysterical comments from you Indians.

Afghanistan hasn't had a centralized govt in its entire history!

The world of the average Joe in Afghanistan ends at the doors of his/her village.

Nonsense..Don`t embarrass yourself by revealing your poor grasp of history.Just 'cause Afghans have largely led a tribal existence for centuries does not mean that they have never been ruled centrally. I am going to spare you a lesson in history but I would suggest google for starters..

Abi, If Afghanistan has not had a centralized government recently, how is it US, NATO's our or any other country's fault? What did we do incur their problems? In Afghanistan, any daily joe just gets a dozen AKs and some RPGs and starts his group to conquer entire Afghanistan like medieval era.

Now if these groups (in this case the Taliban) are accepting other countries' terrorists or endorsing their activities, other countries cannot sit and do nothing.
Your statement is equivalent to saying that if your brother hit me and I come to hit him, you say that I have no right to. Then what am I supposed to think? Naturally I would consider you in league with your brother's mischief isn't it? Anyone would.

Of course in any war there is severe collateral damage and that is the drawback of it. But then countries must take a measure such a way that wars don't occur. That cannot possibly happen in Taliban's case since their own people who are mostly illiterate and don't have basic facilities cannot dare to raise their voices for the fear of being killed.

But if no one is ready to take action inside the country, then those outsider countries who suffered due to such a regime will definitely take an action. Isn't it? What US did was take the initiative. Now don't start screaming about human rights violations and stuff. There are some bad eggs in every country and every army and there will be individual cases. But stating the blame on an entire country's army is simply propaganda.

well, 92% is definately not correct, i am sure there are people who damn dont care about 9/11 or anything else, but this number is not correct because of 2 reasons: it is based on 2 provinces and they shoulb be careful and dont label it as Afghans doent know, they should rather say that residents of these 2 provinces dont know much about 9/11. secondly, i am interested to know how they put the question in front of the people, if they talked about twin tower, september etc, then many people in rural areas are not familiar with any of those terms, they probably knew if the surveyor had put the question in a much localized terms.

Taliban kept the entire nation in hostage, thrown each and every citizen back to the stone age, denied them education, denied them freedom, how the hell will they come to know about it,will Taliban itself go and announce,"we just bombed the WTC,NATO will b here anytime soon, prepare to get killed, because we plan to hide in between u and use u poor people as our shield"

So what ?... Do they think the NATO is on a picnic in Afghanistan?

not actualy picnic actually destablize pakistan as much as they can. Infact another so called (hidden allies) like India who want US in Afghanistan as longer as they can. Because this is the only way to destablize Pakistan. From this game .. terrorist doing this from Afghanistan side so not possible for PAkistan and PAkistan army to blame on India (thats what India's game) On the name of Afghani talibans, indian is doing with International forces as well.. u r doing what u did before from east. Now India is also want US in Afghanistan also because this is the only way to destablize pakistan + from NATO so called allies ..... forces Just to protect Isreal this game is going on. There is no f**ing video of Usama bin laden in which Taliban or Usama claimed that he did this job nor anything available in the market that Taliban or any force in Afghanistan oreven in ASIA did 9/11. Simply Americans also want truth since last 9 years. This is the only case which is without any evidence. Simply now its bn$$ investment of US (forced by Isreal) stay longer in Afghanistan.

about 9/11 - THE WAR WITHOUT OBJECTIVE!

and whats the OBJECTIVE (back game everyone knows)

Sorry to say indians but the fact is.... u r also idiot if 10 people go to India hijack 3 planes and hit mumbai top buildings "very first question in a every person mind (Common sense) where is security ? how is this possible. Unfortuntly game is going on... without any evidence!

There is no WMD in Iraq. No Usama bin laden... So American are staying in Afghanistan can anyone explain this ??? 70 % of Afghanistan under Taliban's control.

simply idiots along with idiots support!
