'They are Northeastern people not Bangladeshis', says Karnataka Home Minister

No, it is not. Even the mere thought of doing so would be a sin. You can still be together without impinging on each other rights.

You must be aware of the Bengali language movement in Assam's Barak valley in the early 60s when the state totally disregarded the bulk of Bengali population's concerns by declaring Assamese as the sole official language. People sacrificed their lives in protests and 19th may is commemorated as Bhasha Divas. Assamese government eventually backtracked.

You cannot expect people to forego their traditions in order to assimilate into the greater society without any repercussions.
One official language for a country keeps the country united. Even India tries to promote Hindi everywhere. Tibetans in China learns Mandarin. Pakistanis be it Panjabi, Sindhi or something else have to learn Urdu. Assimilation is the key.
There were many persian/urdu speakers in Bangladesh. Eventually they mixed with the Bengali speaking people. All for the sake of national unity so that no one can break us.

To me, that is an unfortunate chain of thought.

India conducts its parliamentary business in both Hindi and English, and the states while corresponding with other states can use any recognized mutually agreed upon language. And look where this forceful imposition of Hindi has led us to. Ever widening north-south divide, and the rise of an entire generation of opportunistic leaders in the south preying upon gullible masses.

The unitary nature of the Chinese government combined with the relative homogeneity of the population makes it easier to implement. The less said about Pakistan's high handed imposition of Urdu, the better.

National consciousness need not be built along the linguistic lines alone, there are lots of other ways too.

I think a policy can be implemented that recognizes their languages as official minority languages. That way they can still be allowed to keep parts of their culture and language identity. I do believe that Sweden did this procedure in regards to their Sami population. As someone that lives in Sweden what's your thought on this?

Would be hard for BD, as language rights were an important struggle in our identity. It would be hypocritical too admittedly if the minor languages were all forcefully forgotten.

Bangladesh is even more homogeneous than China.

Look, the world is not perfect. It is never going to be. I also wish for a world without discrimination and hatred for one another. But it's not like I can get it. In the end we have to live in this toxic world. People try to dominate each other. That's the nature of mankind.

I am not against tribal to keep their language and identity. I am not asking them to forget their language. They can keep their language. But if they have to work in Bangladesh then they need to learn Bangla too. Sami people have faced much more discrimination than tribals in Bangladesh. What Sweden did was the right thing to do.

I'll drink to that!

It is still based on 2013 data supplied by India. How India got this figure? India is always putting random figures like 3 million, 12 million, 20 million. Already in 2004 the minister who quoted 12 million figure withdrawn it saying that was a Hersey. So no credibility of it.

It is vetted by the UN, which is why they published it with no caveats.

Have a good cry about it. :lol:

Due to Bangladesh’s protest it was withdrawn. The data was supplied by India and unreliable. If indeed that is accurate how many of them are Hindus? What is the saga of 20 million illegal migrants of Bangladesh living in India? Does your illiterate extremist Hindu politicians know how many zeros are there in 20 million?

@Nilgiri
@gslv mk3
@SOUTHie

So you going to stop this "BD illegals" crap now?

Most of the BD illegals are in the border states. Some are in the south (few are able to travel and settle unhindered like they can in border regions, esp for transient work season), not too many tho % wise....and definitely some minister with elections coming up (and thus trying vote banking identity politics) is certainly no authority on the matter either.

You will see the reality unfold on you lot for example when Assam NRC is completed....and then one done in West Bengal when that biatch there currently is gone. You are free to moan and cry with whatever else you cherry pick in the interim.

You stick out like sore thumb all over India basically with that peculiar dialect of Bengali you have and then your terrible Hindi (if the appearance/sob story already does not give it away) when you try to disguise and pass off as Indian.

OK. Maharashtra has

its problems with BeeDee roaches too:

One language keeps united is just fallacy ? then why we do have canada & usa or usa & uk?
What middle east , arent most of the countries use arabic there?
autonomy & respect for each others & converging self interests are what keeps ppl interested.
Further more having ppl of the same ethnicity/language simply ends up creating herd mentality. Germany & japan are good examples , technologically & economically they are great but without diversity they are prone to majoritarianism views/opinion which may be completely wrong.
