Single bit flip, single event effect or single event upset is a very well know phenomenon in space industry. This is caused by usually gamma rays or some other external radiation factors. A company ACTEL(now microchip) launched a separate series of products that were "radiation hardened" or radhard.
This phenomenon can be very devastating. That's the reason why components used in space industry are usually radhard.
