Most people are unable to identify Bougainville or the adjoining Solomon Islands. In 1988,a civil war sparked off by the depradtions of Rio Tinto corp,owners of the richest copper mine in the world ,Panguna started.
By the time a ceasefire was signed a decade later it had degenerated into a full blown race war between the dark Melanasian Bougainvillains and the reddish Papua New Guineans fighting to keep their largest single source of income.
Melanasians managed to rehab much of the abandoned Japanese equipment
By the time the conflict began in 88 to the signing of a peace deal a decade later almost 400 PNGDF servicemen were KIA along with at least 1500 BRA fighters. Due to a long held blockade of Bougainville medicines and food were withheld and the nature of COIN operations,the destruction of civilian infrastructure including clinics and hospitals at least 10,000 civilians died.
7% of the entire population died in violence,starvation or sickness brought about by the attempted secession.
That's akin to 20 mn Americans dead in ten years , 8mn Japanese or 9 mn Russians.

Some say it was 10% of the entire pre war of 100k who died.
A referendum for 2019 to decide on secession is in the works;the French Rothschilds,the main shareholders however won't let go. 2 weeks ago their agents tried to kidnap some Asian peacemakers on an island tour.
We need to remember,not all the trauma and bloodletting we see is in the headlines. 7% or 10% of the Islanders died while the world rightly screamed for Palestinians,Iraqis and Tutsis-comparatively speaking how many Pakistanis,Indians and Chinese are those dead Bouganvilleans?
