Egypt has declared the Muslim Brotherhood political movement legal, ending a ban on the group that had been in place for decades.

The organization is one of the country's best organized political groups. Egyptian state media announced the government's decision, which clears the way for the Muslim Brotherhood to field candidates in parliamentary elections set for September.

In May, the Brotherhood announced it had formed a new political entity called the Freedom and Justice Party. A spokesman said the party would contest about half of the parliamentary seats in the upcoming election.

The Muslim Brotherhood ran its candidates as independents in previous parliamentary elections. The group controlled about one-fifth of Egypt's lower house after 2005 elections but was virtually shut out of parliamentary elections last year.

Egyptian authorities, under former President Hosni Mubarak, arrested hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters ahead of that voting.

Dangerous move, if we look at what Hamas (granted, they are more radical then MB) did in Gaza (Massacaring all opposition Fatah) but maybe itll help to introduce them into the political process in a non-violent way.

Muslim Brotherhood is only organized opposition. Egyptians are going slow because they want alternative secular parties to evolve. Muslim brotherhood will never come to power on its own in egypt, a moderate muslim country. But they will be important part of egyptian politics from now on.

Comes from a German who elected Hitler - what a hypocrite.

Muslim Brotherhood has been oppressed by the west for over a centuries , them coming back to politics and their change of strategy to change Egypt through non violent means is promising.

Good luck.

Doubt he personally was old enough to have voted for Herr Hitler.

Good luck.

If I recall, the Muslim brotherhood and Sayyid Qutb in particular had a major influence on political Islam's development in the 50's and 60's.

Must be very hard for you to pretend to be even more stupid than you are, but good job!
My parents weren't even born when Hitler was already dead. So i voted as much for him as you did.

I know some people are big fans of Hitler and very envious of Germans for "producing" him.

Unlike you however I dislike strongly what he did and therefore would not like another group like the Nazis to come into power anywhere, however that is what happened with Hamas, although they only share the ideology not the means.

So to Egyptians who are thinking strait and there are a lot, the MB is a group to be handled with caution. I actually have friends who are Egyptians and they are the ones cautioning against trusting the MB to easily.

Historically the Muslim Brotherhood leading up to, during, and since WW II have been anti-Jew. The MB fielded at Hitler's request division(s) in the Nazi Army during WW II, some fought in Europe some fought in Asia/the Middle East.

The "head" of the WW II MB was taken by Hilter from his residence in Jerusalem and brought for a time to Berlin to be part of the anti-Jewish, anti Allies War Alliance with the Nazis and Italian Fascists.

The failure to established in 1947 the nation of Palestine, under UN Resolution 181, concurrently with the establishment of Israel as a nation, is attributable larely to the MB opposing UN Resolution 181.

So, most of the complicated problems over a viable nation of Palestine, long before the borders were lost by the MB backed 1967 War against Israel, are largely attributable to the hatemonering radical Islamic views and politics of the MB.

Most of people are afraid the MB will win and they will, if there can be conservative Christians party's why can't their be Conservative Muslim Parties ? Oh right there Terrorists, they wanna install stealth Shariah etc etc, I hoping for the Muslim brotherhood to win this election after 8 decades of being banned.

It's wrong to assume collective guilt when most Germans weren't even born during Hitler's time in power but behaviour like this shouldn't be tolerated either.

Amazingly stupid and lacking in nuance for a political science major.

interestingly enough -- the Muslim Brotherhood and groups like Jamaat e Islami are EXTREMELY well organized. No shortage of funds. Quite democratic actually in the sense that they hold elections and elect (not select) the people who run their respective parties.

I personally do not foresee their victory in any elections in either country --though their members may run as independents at some point in time. Egypt will be a very interesting country to follow in the coming months/years.

there are 180 million Pakistanis, no need to generalize.

if he were alive today i'm not sure how he would feel about Pakistanis or Muslims......suffice to say, while he may have exhibited fantastic TRAITS as a charismatic and emotionally-charged leader, his actions were barbaric and inexcusable--especially against the Jews.

looking to today, it's sad to see history often repeating itself in one way or the other

I edited the one sentence to make it less general.. I was making fun of Aeronaut in a cynical way for his insulting insinuations. It was over the top, I apologize. The rest of the post however is as nuanced as need be on the internet...

The facts are Hamas is very similar in ideology, structure and behavior to the Nazis they just lack the resources to take it as far. The MB is massively and openly anti-semitic and undemocratic. So it remains to be seen if allowing them into the election is a good move. If you want to contest that, go ahead.
