TUNIS (TAP) - President Beji Caid Essebsi chaired, on Friday, in his capacity as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, a national flag-raising ceremony on the new navy vessel made in Tunisia “Al Istiqlal” (Independence) belonging to the National Navy.
The navy vessel inauguration ceremony was attended by Ministers of Defense, Interior, Industry, Energy and Mining as well as the Chief of Staff of the naval forces, the President of the Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA) and the Director General of the shipbuilding complex.
A presentation was given on the shipbuilding sector in Tunisia and its contribution to boosting the national economy.
The “Al-Istiqlal” navy vessel was constructed by Tunisian experts as part of partnership between the public and private sectors.
The navy vessel, the studies for its implementation began in 2012, meets international standards. It is equipped with a comprehensive monitoring system and has high propulsive force.
The new navy vessel, whose cost is 40% lower than international market prices, provides great support to the national fleet in border control of sea areas.
