The Kerala Model: Probably the right way forward

Mr. Nair what do you think of the economic model followed by Singapore..a space constrained country (like Kerala) with high HDI and GDP.

I m in Singapore right now and let me assure you that the quality of life in Kerala is better than that in Singapore. Sure Singapore has roadways and tall buildings and what not. But it is also true that husband and wife both have to work their ***** off to just sustain themselves and 2 kids in Singapore. In Kerala, a 30,000 Rs income per month can easily sustain a family of 4.

.
Comparing Chennai(metro) with Idukki ? are u kidding? wats that logic behind that comparing? wat is the importance of Idduki (don't say u living there):cheesy:.
There is nothing wrong in comparing both if they have comparable levels of HDI. Ofcourse the comparison wont be with regard to GDP but with regard to HDI.

In which way hygienic is relevant to tis thread? ok.. anyhow u written I suppose to give reply. Your name itself indicates hw clean u are?? Your post suggested clearly that hw dirty we are ....so sad TN people made Pamba river dirty. We are non-hygienic(according to ur post) then better ban TN people entry and pass the resolution in ur state assembly that would be gud na?.
Keralites are educated and well behaved unlike many of the Tamils who pounce on their neighbours and beat them up just because 1 crazy politician asked them to do so. You guys should be more broadminded. For narrow minded tamils like you, it is either the North Indians coming to destroy the Tamil legacy or the Malayalees coming to steal our money mentality.

During mullai periyar issue keralites faced huge revenue loss becoz ,TN govt. not allowed TN Sabaraimalai devotees to enter into KL regarding safety concerns. Then your govt. begged badly to TN govt. to allow TN sabarimala devotees into KL after TN.govt granted permission , your traders and police from Kerala burst crackers welcoming passengers from Tamil Nadu.
Shameless people haaahaa.
Shameless people? LOL. After you beat up malayalees in TN because of some friction between the government? Stupid Illiterates!

We corrupting your river baldly and we are non hygienic then why the hell you people (including ur CM) begging at us?. Get life………..

They must have set off the crackers because the issue was finally resolved. You guys think it is because we cant survive without you. It is the truth that people from TN have one of the lowest standards of personal hygiene in the country. No offence meant. It is simply the truth. Want Proof? Go to sabarimala.

PS: I m sorry if the comments have hurt broad-minded tamils on this forum. All this, even though the truth is meant as a reply to narrow minded people like medulla.

We are all missing the point here.

Out of more than 60 years of independence, Congress has merely ruled Kerala for 10-15 years. Communist/Socialist parties are regularly re-elected in Kerala.

It's like saying Communism is better than Democracy. It's like saying China is better than India.

Plus communism doesn't believe in religion. For them religion is poison. Religion is quite important part of any Indian's life. In communism lenient Dharmic religions won't stand a chance. Look at China! There are more Christians in China now than Buddhist/Confusian. The same thing's happening in Kerala. Hindus are on verge of becoming a minority.

not much different from bangladesh? LOL. You make me ask this question. Are we as India so different from Bangladesh? Why is it that a poor in TN which has a higher income per capita has dismal conditions when compared to a poor in Kerala? Why is it that Gujarat with such an impressive growth trajectory scores badly in HDI? Why is it that there arent slums in Kerala? Why is it that there is no remarkable difference in the living standards between the Cities and Villages in Kerala? Why is it that majority of the most liveable cities in India are in Kerala? Do MNCs and Big Corporations take centreplace for growth? If so, Gurgaon should be a better liveable city than Kochi, Kozhikode or Allapuzha. But that aint the truth.
You should realise that it is the initiative that people take that leads to betterment of lifestyle. Chasing GDP is pointless. Even though Delhi has a higher GDP than Kochi, sane people would prefer to spend their lives in Kochi rather than Delhi. this leads to another question. What if there were 5 Kochis instead of 1 Delhi? It is time we start splitting into medium sized cities and spread growth into those B2 and lower cities. Townships like Itarsi and Krishnagiri should develop more while it is time for cities like Delhi and Mumbai to stagnate. Honestly, the first tier cities in India are overloaded.

The reason I compared with bangladesh is because of reliance on foreign remittance. Probably bangladesh is much better off in this regard.
Also, kerala has very high debt compared to other states.

In other words, if I work my ***** off here, borrow large amount of money, my family and relatives will have a good HDI.
That is not a "MODEL" one would follow.

.
to follow the Kerala model is to follow a democratic socialist welfare model while a high majority of Keralites may pay their taxes people in other places do not nonetheless if we were to implement this nationally it would be a bane on the economy and would increase gov't spending and our national deficit is already more than 70% of our GDP unless every Indian rich or poor wants to pay yearly taxes for social security/welfare and i highly doubt that the rich indians like ambani want to be taxed heavily to help in their eyes the lower castes/lower people.

capitalism is the way for India it may take time and get to other portions of society slower but nonetheless it works.

where do you live in singapura

Kerala is no paradise and has some faults (mainly people having to work abroad to bring in money). Nevertheless, it's a shining example of development in the third world and shows the dramatic effects a strong socialist system can have on the quality of life.

Going forward though, Kerala needs to build up its manufacturing industry. While the government can play a direct role in this, there is no reason not to allow investors to build industry in Kerala. Of course, it should still be regulated to avoid exploitation of workers and pollution of the lands.

that's not true. The #1 religion in China is folk religion, officially Confucian-Buddhist-Taoist, but what I like to call grandma's superstitions.

Religion in China - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With around 400 million adherents Chinese folk religion is one of the major religions in the world, comprising about 6% of world population.[12][14] In China over 30% of the population adheres to Shenism or Taoism.[13]

In 2010, according to an official survey conducted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and published in the 2010 Bluebook Annual Report on China's Religions, the number of Protestants in China is 23.05 million, or 1.8% of the total population.[83][84][85] At the same time, a survey conducted by sociologist Fenggang Yang (specialised in the study of religion in Chinese societies) and the Purdue's Center on Religion and Chinese Society, revealed that 18% of the Chinese are Buddhist, 15% are non-religious and 3.2% are Christian.[24] These statistics are fairly similar to those reported by the 2008 Pew Forum survey.[25]

In my opinion, Kerala is doing it the right way. A developing country has to get literate first, as education is the backbone of industrial development. You cannot industrialize on a population of illiterate serfs. Kerala is doing what Mao did in China 1949-1976. Despite being poorer than Africa, China had life expectancy higher than South Korea until 1980 and a 93% youth literacy rate, 80% overall when Mao died. It shows that to live a long healthy life and to get educated doesn't actually cost that much money, even for a really big population. Its the "luxuries" that cost more.

The first 40 amps of power delivered to a home change lives. For 40 amps, you get light at night, can connect to the internet and have a refrigerator to store food. That's modernity already. For an average of less than 1 milliamp per home, a community can open a centralized laundry.

The next 300 amps delivered to a home, for an air conditioning/heating system, TV, personal washing/drying machine, electrical appliances, etc. are purely optional, but it is far more expensive than the 40 life changing amps.

Dude one of the main reasons Communists lost the last general election in Kerala is that took on Christian Missionaries in the case of professional colleges, against which Christian top brass even brought 'Edaya Lekhanam'. So eventhough I am not a Communist I really wanted them to win last elections which sadly didn't happen.

If I remember correctly one Christian Sabha offered incentives to its followers for having more children.

see here nobody denying any facts about chennai or any other metros of india... i lived in chennai for 2 yrs and am now in bangalore for last 6 yr.....
you can see development in both cities every day , new IT parks are coming up,new shopping mall are coming up..etc...

but my point is it is a way to measure the development...? in those cities millions are struggling to match their daily expense because of inflation...... it is clearly rich is getting richer and poor is getting poorer.....

having said that am never gonna say kerala is paradaise , like any other states its having its own advantages and disadvantages....
in kerala compare to other states.. there is no big gap between rich and poor , reason i can say is that since we do have strong labour unions low class workers defenetly getting much deserved wage... [some times more that that]...

and thanks to our political awareness among the population , we do have much much better politicians than other state..... and corruption is low compared to other states....

and most importantly we have a strong relegious harmony among people...... unlike other states here politticians can use the majority/minority cards for votes......

kerala model is not a text book way of development.... its a something everyone can refer for create high social developemnt

More precisely, the Kerala model has been defined as:

A set of high material quality-of-life indicators coinciding with low per-capita incomes, both distributed across nearly the entire population of Kerala.
A set of wealth and resource redistribution programmes that have largely brought about the high material quality-of-life indicators.
High levels of political participation and activism among ordinary people along with substantial numbers of dedicated leaders at all levels. Kerala's mass activism and committed cadre were able to function within a largely democratic structure, which their activism has served to reinforce

Kerala, a state in India, is a bizarre anomaly among developing nations, a place that offers real hope for the future of the Third World. Though not much larger than Maryland, Kerala has a population as big as California's and a per capita annual income of less than $300. But its infant mortality rate is very low, its literacy rate among the highest on Earth, and its birthrate below America's and falling faster. Kerala's residents live nearly as long as Americans or Europeans. Though mostly a land of paddy-covered plains, statistically Kerala stands out as the Mount Everest of social development; there's truly no place like it

Tamils illiterates? really?? our literacy rate is 80.3(2011) . Tamils got 2 noble prizes hw many u people got(who have literacy rate more than 95%) ?? Great mathematician Srinivasa ramanuja frm Tamilnadu have u knw that??.

Who is narrow minded ?? Tamils?? After 1965 no Tamilians ruled our state , our CM lists MGR(malayali 3term ) , Jayalaitha( half Kanadiga ,3term) ,Karunanithi ( Mother tongue Telugu ,5 term).

In wic field Keralites out performed than non-hygenic dirty Tamils ?? even in historical times . We are not superior to anybody and we are not inferior to nobody.
