The radar height is around the same, more or less on the Burke, Atago and the Korean destroyer. The Zumwalt class also doesn't have a tower for its radars. Now I could be wrong, let's bring in the experts.

The design of the Kolkata is akin to new generation of stealth ships. In particular a stealthy ship shape can be achieved by constructing the hull and superstructure with a series of slightly protruding and retruding surfaces. Sloped surface features are common in new stealth ships such as the Sachsen class of the German Navy, Type 45 of the Royal Navy, and the Horizon Class of the French Navy. Kolkata class has been designed , from my view, to reduce the RCS (radar cross section) , which enables it greater stealth ability.

In my view Kolkata class are designed for their lurker capabilities. I'd like to see her preform with other ships, actually.

Umm, nop, not even close.

052D is old design and the last of the 052 platform that started with the Luhu in 1994. Type 055 is already being built.

I just mean the radar. Is the radar higher up make a significant difference, and if so, why does the Japanese design not have it.

It doesn't make much difference IMO because these are phased array.

Just becos you lack a powerful one, don't put down the significant. And this project will take years to materialized.
Please explain the signifcance of the main gun then. Yes, it is nice to have the biggest you can get (obviously the IN have felt this way) but tell me exacly what kind of difference it makes.

Yes the P-17A won't be in service until 2022 but the P-15Bs will be in service from 2017/18 which isn't too long...

Aegis has very powerful radar which can detect even small RCS targets at huge ranges and with high rate of update, but as result it is very heavy and located low, reducing the detection range of skimmering missiles. Its illumination radars are also very powerful and long range (can fire at 240 km), but they can only address 3 targets simultaneously (to sides, front - only 1).

Sachsen class destroyer has much higher located multifunctional AESA radar (APAR). It can detect skimmering missiles at longer range than Aegis and engage much more targets simultaneously. But its much smaller and as result max range is limited to 150 km (for low RCS even lower). It has also SMART-L radar for long range detection, but this radar has low update rate and it cant illuminate targets and make terminal guidance. The update rate especially important vs ballistic missiles.

Conclusion: Aegis is much better vs. ballistic targets and long range high flying targets. Sachsen is much better vs. big number of low flying targets.

that's interesting, nice to know.

So different roles. That's interesting, since America doesn't really have a ship of this class, would you say they are lacking, or the cons out weight the pros?

I am surprised you do not know bigger gun has advantage in shore bombardment? Support amphibious expedition. A bigger calibre boast more submunition for anti aerial and a wider coverage/ umbrella. More damage is done with a bigger rounds. And big gun with longer calibre will means longer range.

The AEGIS can only handle 3 targets at the same time? Wow !!! That's a lot less than what I expected. That's big vulnerability in case of a saturation attack.

I was under the impression that AEGIS has 4 fire control radars, but I guess it has only 3 right? An each fire control radar can only handle 1 target at a time, or is it 3?

Can you comment on the MF / START naval radar? I had read that it can handle 12 targets simultaneously, with 2 missiles at each target if needed.
