Operation kills at least five terrorists, army says

ANKARA

Turkish jets destroyed PKK targets in northern Iraq, the military said Tuesday.

A statement by the Turkish General Staff revealed at least five terrorists were killed during the operation today between 1.40 p.m. and 2.00 p.m. local time (1040-1100GMT).

The destroyed targets included shelters and weapons dumps, the army said.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU -- resumed its decades-old armed campaign in July last year.

Since then, PKK terrorist attacks have martyred more than 600 security personnel and also claimed the lives of many civilians, including women and children, while more than 7,000 PKK terrorists have been killed in army operations.

BITLIS, AGRI, Turkey

At least six PKK terrorists were killed in two separate incidents in Turkey's eastern provinces on Wednesday, according to local officials.

Bitlis Governor Ahmet Cinar told Anadolu Agency that four PKK terrorists were killed in an airstrike in the Tatvan district of the eastern province.

Cinar said that two PKK shelters and two handmade explosives were also destroyed in the airstrike.

A curfew has also been imposed in the villages of Kusluca, Ucevler, Cavuslar, Anadere and Odabasi of the Tatvan district for the security of residents, he added.

In a separate incident, two other PKK terrorists were killed by drones in the eastern province of Agri, according to a statement by the governorship.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and the EU -- resumed its decades-old armed campaign in July last year.

Since then, more than 700 security force members have been martyred and around 8,000 PKK terrorists killed or apprehended.

Helicopters destroy three bomb- loaded cars in Turkey’s southeast

Diyarbakır on Oct. 11 and 12.
Attack helicopters opened fire after noticing that bombs had been loaded into cars for use in attacks by outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants, according to a statement issued by the Diyarbakır Governor’s Office on Oct. 13.

“Three cars were destroyed on Oct. 11 and 12 after attack helicopters fired on them in the Beğendik village of Diyarbakır’s Lice,” the statement read, as it added that the operation was carried out after security forces received information regarding the explosives in the cars.

The statement also said operations against the PKK militants were ongoing with the efforts of the gendarmerie.

“The legal processes are continuing with the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Order. The efforts against terrorists are ongoing with increasing determination and will,” it added.

Meanwhile, one soldier was killed and five security personnel were wounded on Oct. 13 when the PKK militants detonated an explosive in a rural area of the Beytüşşebap district of the southeastern province of Şırnak, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Militants detonated the explosive during the passage of security personnel who were conducting a search, the agency stated.

One soldier was killed and five security personnel, including four soldiers and one village guard, were wounded in the attack. The wounded were taken to the Şırnak State Hospital.

Security forces engaged in armed clashes with PKK militants after the attack.

Elsewhere, seven concrete mixers abducted by the PKK militants were found in the eastern province of Tunceli. The militants reportedly seized the concrete mixers on Oct. 9 after intercepting a road in the province.

“Six of the seven concrete mixers were brought to the center of the province after an operation carried out by our security forces. The other vehicle could not be activated due to a technical malfunction and it could not be pulled by a tow truck, therefore it could not be brought to the center of the province,” read a statement released by the Tunceli Governor’s Office.

Separately, the Turkish Armed Forces carried out airstrikes against PKK targets in the Zap region of northern Iraq. Two weapon-launching pits were destroyed and two PKKmilitants were killed in the aerial operation that was conducted between 2:30 and 2:50 p.m. on Oct. 12.

US opposes PKK involvement in Mosul operation
State Dept. says it views PKK as a terrorist outfit

WASHINGTON

The U.S. opposes the participation of the PKK terrorist group in an upcoming campaign to liberate the Iraqi city of Mosul, the State Department said Thursday.

"We clearly view the PKK as a terrorist organization so we would not be supporting them," as part of the Mosul campaign, agency spokesman Mark Toner said during a press briefing.

According to Toner, the U.S. distinguishes the PKK from its Syrian wing, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), and other Kurdish groups in the region.

Although Turkey and the U.S. have the same position on the PKK, they differ about the PYD.

Ankara considers the PYD an extension of the PKK but the U.S. describes the group as a "reliable partner" on the ground in Syria.

When Toner was asked whether the U.S. would continue to support the Mosul campaign if the Iraqi government wanted to include the PKK among its troops, he declined comment.

Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin on Thursday expressed concerns about the PKK taking advantage of the Mosul operation and trying to extend its territory in northern Iraq.

Regarding Turkish troops deployed to Iraq's Bashika Camp that has recently become a source of tension between Ankara and Baghdad, Toner reiterated that all anti-Daesh efforts in Iraq should be done in coordination with the Iraqi government.

Baghdad wants Turkish troops to leave Bashika. But Ankara says Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi personally asked Turkey for help after Daesh took control of Mosul. Turkey responded to the request by sending its own soldiers to Bashika.

Asked about Iran-backed Shiite militia Badr Brigade's threats against Turkish forces in Bashika, Toner urged dialogue between the sides and did not comment any further.

Responding to a question by Anadolu Agency about whether Defense Secretary Ash Carter is also concerned about sectarian strife in northern Iraq after Mosul is recaptured from Daesh, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said it is one of the top priorities for Carter.

"It's important to keep the focus on ISIL and that efforts need to be made to try and address concerns about sectarian issues," he said.

He acknowledged that it was sectarian divisions that led to the rise of Daesh in Iraq.

"It's important on the day after that the people of Mosul and the people of Iraq have a peaceful situation of better life to look forward to once ISIL is removed," he added.

Cook said American leadership is talking and sharing sectarian concerns with partners in the region.
