The government is obviously fudging the numbers. The rest of the world was calling them out on this a year ago when they were claiming the "lowest mortality rate in the world". Indian members here were accusing Pakistan for hiding infection numbers based on it. Someone has posted a video of a CNN reporter who spent about an hour at one of the crematoriums. She counted 13 or so bodies being cremated within that hour. The government records for that entire day only showed 7. The crematorium in charge said that they are cremating upwards of a hundred bodies every day.

Furthermore, as per other crematoriums, the only deaths being officially registered as 'from Covid' are the ones that come from the hospital with a certificate declaring them as such. All those who are dying in their homes or even in the hospital parking lots are not being declared as deaths from Covid.

Every Indian knows what's going on. However, as is the MO in India (and Pakistan as well, for that matter), as long as they can keep the false perception up, nothing else matters. The more it falls apart the harder they try. At times they do it to the extent that they start believing their own lies at their own detriment. @gulli's priority is to secure the already shattered and tattered perception of India on an online forum where no one ever believed it in the first place.

Covid was a stress test that exposed the structural flaws in India that were there all along. Had Manmohan Singh been in charge the results would have been similiar. The problem is India. Not Modi.

I reckon smart people like @Maira La have it sussed. India is just a Sub Saharan country but because of it's size - 1.4 billion you can impressive cherry picked showcases. India has done a very good job of building up this image of gold plated jewels when all it is cheap plastic with sprayed gold on top.
