The collapse of secular India
HAMID WAHEED
The atrocities against the poor and lower class Hindus, the Muslims,, and the people from other sects and beliefs, continue under a state of denial by the Indian administration and its state machinery. However, some Indian writers with a conscience, like Arundhati Roy, former Maharashtra IG police S.M. Mushrif, and various human rights organisations keep raising their voices on the issue whenever they can under the coercive environment of Hindu extremist elements.
Even today, Sikhs, Christian, Muslims and Dalits are a victim of state policies and the inequality prevailing in India. For example, in the past the exclusion of 65 million Dalits from the Indian society was specifically on religious and cultural grounds. Still due to pre-assigned duties of the caste into which they are born, many Dalits are destined to do sanitation jobs, transport human excreta manually, clear animal carcasses and human remains. Frequently subjected to humiliation, the Dalits are virtually slaves and hardly in a position to choose a profession of their own choice. In this case, the UN Human Rights Councils (UNHRC) September 2009 decision to declare discrimination based on caste system a human rights abuse has stirred up harsh opposition from India. However, the UNs decision came about despite a strong resentment from New Delhi and its aggressive lobbying to get the Council to delete the word caste from its draft.
Each passing day, discovers new realities about Shining India, and the atrocities committed on the minorities, when the truth glitters from the false cover stories. On February 18, 2007, at least 68 people, mostly Pakistanis, were killed in a series of explosions and fire on the Samjhota Express in the northern Indian State of Haryana, near Panipat, about 80km north of Delhi. Initially, the Indians blamed Lashkar-i-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) for the explosions. But later it was found that right-wing Hindu activists and an Indian army officer Lt Col Srikant Prohit were the main culprits of the crime.
Similarly, in the Mecca Masjid blast on May 18, 2007, about 80 Muslims were detained during the probe. The investigation followed the script until the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found evidence that mobile phone-detonated explosives packed in metal tubes were similar to the Ajmer blasts. The bombs contained a deadly mix of RDX and TNT, in proportions, often used by the Indian Army. CBI Director Ashwani Kumar, while talking to the media, said: An activist named Sunil Joshi played a key role in orchestrating the Ajmer blast, and a set of mobile SIM cards that had been used in the activation of the bomb-triggers in the Mecca Masjid blast was used again in the Ajmer blast. Meanwhile, the National Investigating Agency (NIA) filed a case in the court accusing 11 Hindus, and members of the right-wing Sanathan Sanstha, of masterminding and executing the October 2009 Malegaon blast. Hence, initial suspicion and interrogation of Muslims, some believed to be members of sleeper cells of jihadi groups, turned out to be a mere allegation.
