The Carrier Dilemma: How Many is Enough?

Man u are kidding me :woot:

CBG - Carrier battle group (AC + the escorts it gets, it can be 2 destroyers + 2 frigates + 1-2 subs+ 1-2 corvettes + 1-2 support ships)

Carrier battle group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LHD - Landing Helicopter Dock - a smaller carrier version, only helicopters can be operated from it( Landing helicopter dock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

LPD - Landing Platform Dock (remember INS Jalashwa??)

Amphibious transport dock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Small correction- LHDs CAN operate VSTOL a/c ie USMC operate Harriers and soon F-35s off the LHDs.

Sorry mate just learning, thank you for the help.

yes, but only when F-35s get in service  till than they should do with helicopters only :D

no problem mate, i was shocked because u have been here since more than one year & also senior than me :)

Actually the USMC does currently operate Harriers off LHDs and has doe for decades.

yes, i read of it once, & i was shocked that US using British made jets. I think it was a JV b/w US & Britain, but can't US make it's own VSTOL jets??

How much time does it take to build one aircraft carrier.
Depends the For the US it takes ~5 years for their SuperCarriers for others it takes longer. India is just starting out so the learning curve is relatively steep and so it will take a while to build and there will be delays but later ACC construction will be speedier.

The Harriers the USMC use are a result of a joint venture between McDonald Douglas and BAE and are souped up versions designated the AV-8s. There is significant US origin content on these AV-8s. And when the USMC first started operating them (late 1970s) the Harriers fitted he bill for the USMC perfectly and there was no point re inventing the wheel.

Build To Order: One Aircraft Carrier Here's why it takes more than seven years to make the world's most complicated manufactured product. - July 22, 2002
The job involves 47,000 tons of precision-welded steel up to four inches thick, more than a million distinct parts, 900 miles of wire and cable, around 40 million skilled-worker hours, battalions of engineers, and over seven years of hard work.
And that seven years is with decades of experience building a highly specific type of large ships. Smaller ships take less time, of course, but an aircraft carrier no matter how small is no ordinary ship.

In wartime I'm sure its much much less to build it. Roughly 3 years I would say.

Sir, can u pls explain why the cost of obtaining 6 CBGs will be 120 billion dollars??

cost of INS vikramaditya CBG (just an assumption) will be = $2.8 billion for the AC + 2 Kolkata class destroyers ($ 1 billion) + 2 P-17 Frigates ($ 500 million) + 1 P-28 corvette ($ 250-300 million) + 1 INS Chakra ( $ 700 million for 10 year lease) + 1 or 2 support ships (maybe $ 100 million more), so at current cost the cost of purchasing a complete CBG comes out to be around $5.5 billion, so if we had gone for 6 CBGs, the cost cannot go more than $35 billion.

Sorry, I should have said Include the cost of aircraft, personnell, maintenance equipment etc.
but basically.. just for a CVBG

Construction Costs – $5.5 billion (not counting Aircraft) x 6 = $35 billion
Operating and Support Costs – $5-10 billion (Carrier with ACft,weapons, personell along with support ships based on 1/2 cost of similar US CBG) ..just the carrier takes up around $60-90 million dollars (based on 1/2 of US Carrier annual cost @ $150 million)
Other Costs(Construction overruns , delays ) – $1 billion(optimistic that there are minimal delays in the next 4 carriers)
Total Average Cost – $14.5 billion each x 6 = $84 billion (Not counting cost of Aircraft and their support equipment cost)

And I have not adjusted for possible inflation.
So even in the most optimistic case.. these 6 carrier will easily cost close to $90 Billion.

^^ adding on the support/escorts of the CBG such as 1-2 $1.3 BN a peice P-15A/B, 1-2 $800million-1BN a peice P-17/A, 1-2 $1-1.5 BN a peice SSK/SSN, 1-2 $300-400 million support ship and 1-2 $500-600 million a piece P-28A corvettes. Then their is the air group for ech carrier which, all told, with fighters, helos,AWACS etc will cost $3-4 BN per ACC. This is about ~$15 BN per CBG excluding the ACC itself.

Are we talking about ACCs that run on nuclear on non nuclear propulsion. How would that effect costs of production and /or maintenance.

I am again saying that corvettes are not employed in CBG.
