After Taseer: The birth of a liberal movement

After Salmaan Taseer’s assassination, a clear line of distinction was drawn between the liberals and conservatives of Pakistan. This assassination will change the course of Pakistan’s history, and this is not an exaggeration. The outspoken Governor had flaws, but hypocrisy was not one of them. He made a promise to the minorities of Pakistan and fought for it till his last breath.

Whether his demand was legitimate according to the constitution of Pakistan or the Islamic law is beyond the scope of this article. Taseer has become a symbol for the liberals and Mumtaz Qadri for the rightists. The rightists had already declared their agenda while a new liberal movement was triggered.

The rightists want to see Pakistan as a theocratic state. The general impression the world over is that this will happen in the near future. However, there is a significant majority in Pakistan that does not subscribe to this idea. Even Pakistanis do not realize this because the liberals were a cowardly lot, until the assassination. Nobody noticed the liberal population because they have learned to remain silent and let the rightists, who have resorted to force, dominate. The reality is different, and is about to become more different. The liberals have seen firsthand what will happen to them if they try to express their feelings openly and they have decided to react.

Mumtaz Qadri was hailed a hero by the rightist groups. A segment of the Pakistani public celebrated the assassination and justified it on religious grounds. Then something unexpected happened. For the first time, there was a wave of offense from the liberal front. Instead of silently listening to the other side, the liberals took to the streets in protest, organised vigils and wrote extensively and openly, conveying their feelings towards the killing. A liberal movement was born.

A society where reasoning doesn’t have a role to play is destined to cripple with time. To bring about a true rightist revolution, popularity is essential. For instance, Turkey was transformed into a secular state from a conservative one by Kemal Ataturk. The transition was successful back then, but the conservative parties are on the rise once again. The only difference is that Ankara has grown ideologically and has learned to shape itself through reasoning and dialogue. The rightist leadership is trying to squeeze Ataturk’s secular legacy through the parliament instead of the guns. Clearly, the strategy is more successful. The movement by Turkey’s ruling Islamist-rooted party is such that even the Turkish army, considered the guardian of Ataturk’s legacy, is unable to control it.

A movement from the liberals was inevitable – all it needed was fuel. The volcano erupted with the assassination and the cornered liberals were pushed off the edge.

Members please share your thoughts will Taseers murder push liberals pakistanis to get out of their box ??

Islam if implemented in its spirit has protection and all the liberties you can expect out of a society.. When people misuse laws or are misguided doesn't make them followers but those are identified as misguided people.. I would have appreciated more if there was a movement to cleanse misconceptions instead of showing a polarity to Principles of Islam.

for "Taseer became symbol for the liberals and Mumtaz Qadri for the rightists"

Thats called the "bad sample" in both ways. Neither Qadri followed the book nor Taseer was a flag-barrer of liberals. He died but didn't embraced death during the fight standing for the liberals or fighting as a fighter. He got assassinated though he had liberal views.. it sad in itself but not a "sacrifice".. so lets not glamorize the victim nor the culprit.

What-ever you may do after this incident, please do not try to misuse it. Understand Islam and reject it if you are not able to find justice and equality for everybody in it, let it be Muslims or non-Muslims. But launching a movement in the name of Liberalism before understanding Islam is as much misguidedness as the people who are misguided and thought they followed Islam. And if you have a movement to start nevertheless, start a movement to educate people and preach true teachings of Islam and clearing misunderstandings about it and that will be a great service to the nation, society and humanity as a whole.

Well I hope so but this incident could also push liberals back for the fear of being killed ot threatened. But I have seen positive outcomes like FIR's being filed against the sultan mosque and people coming out to vigils and speaking out

Taseer had Indian wife and he most probably was spying for India.
Most likely assisted in attack on Srilankan team aswell.
Nothing but a traitor.
His son hold Indian passport, what more proof of his Indian allegiance is needed?
Govt. need to explain his Indian nexus.

You should consider kicking out Shoaib Malik too, as he too has an Indian wife and might have been involved in framing Pakistani players in the recent match fixing scandal...and who knows even attack on Srilankan team was perpetrated by them together.;)

Shoaib Malik have well known Muslim wife and their marriage has more to do with treatment of Indians with Sania.
Shoaib is not sitting in key positions and ironically is treated badly due to Indian control over Pakistan govt. full of traitors like Taseer.
