The Battle of Paracel Islands

The Battle of Paracel Islands is the most important and overlook campaign of China after 1949. The consequence of the victory is it almost permanently settle the Paracel sovereignty question. It also open China up to further Spratly.

If China was defeated in Paracel, then she probably would have a higher tolerance of dividing up Spratly with the SCS littoral countries.

Lets go step by step into the topic.

The Battle of Paracel was fought between China and South Vietnam and the order of Battle is as below.

The most incredible thing is China won the battle even though all four ship are just 1600t in total displacement, and far lesser than just one Vietnamese ship.

China was using old rusty Soviet fast attack crafts.

There is absolutely no doubt that Vietnam should have won that battle. Supposedly China's fast attack crafts didn't even have missiles, the soldiers had to use hand held missile launchers to sink Vietnamese ships.

Another legend is Chinese solders compensated their inferior firepower by throwing hand grenades at Vietnamese ships.

What if the 3 Vietnam ship turn back immediately or come back three days later? China would suffer defeat.

You ignore the background, Taiwan KMT allowed PLAN East Sea Fleet to go through the strait, we had 3 missile frigates on the way to battlefield.

If it comes to another bout on the seas between China and Vietnam today, the Chinese cost guard alone have more firepower to sink the entire Vietnamese navy many times over. And this time it won't be just one or two islands, we'll literally confiscate/capture ALL islands held by Vietnam in SCS--game over for Vietnam. Lol ;-)
