Dude have you seen the salaries of the people employed by these companies, even in India they are paid handsomely. Add to that the various regulations and the expenses for testing etc. Can we blame them if they are charging high.Afterall they are pvt companies and are bound to answer their share holders. I am a Pharmaceutical research scientist..

Why Indian Medicine are cheaper compared to western one
1. Indian companies produce generic version of branded products hence resulting in about 1/10th of the branded innovators cost.
2. Indian pharmacist are not paid as that handsomely as the western one in the organisation, resulting in cost cutting.
3. We Indians work tremendously.. If you see the work hours per day in total irrespective of Industry, we are second highest hour per day calculation after Japan.
4. China has a very good contribution to the Indian products. Their raw materials are supplied at a very cheap cost, resulting in very less manufacturing cost.
5. We don't have to go for full forth clinical trial being a generic producer. In-Vivo Bio-equivalence study is enough.
6. Cost of labour is quite less compared to western nations.
7. Facility maintenance and machines manufactured at India for formulating the dosages are very cheap compared to western manufacturers..
8. We need business, hence we keep cost at very low level..

these government scientist have no accountability, when good leaders with Knowledge come to power and question the respective department for progress and out put, sure these guys will find more medicines, etc.
Government is not to only give subsides and care for the poor who is lazy to work or think about vote bank.
Government is like any other private sector who stocks are owned. Live wise every citizen owns a stock in Government and Government has the obligation to run the country successfully.

They were independent researchers. If the scientists working on a particular drug forgo their salary and royalty, that will lower the price the drug by a large extent.

The Govt should give an ultimatum to Govt labs to come out with something worthwhile or face closure. Anyways I think its better to fund pvt labs than maintain entire non-productive facilities.
