Terrorists Target America
NEW YORK/LONDON: US and British security officials searched United Parcel Service cargo flights after packages containing explosives were found in Britain and Dubai on Friday.
US President Barack Obama said that both packages originated in Yemen and were bound for the United States. They contained explosive material and were a "credible terrorist threat." They were headed to two places of Jewish worship in Chicago, the president added.
A US official said the parcels were found in planes scheduled to fly to the United States, one in an airport north of London and another at Dubai airport, and said intelligence on a possible plot came from an ally abroad.
Meanwhile, two military fighter jets escorted a civilian Emirates plane to New York City. The plane was carrying cargo from Yemen. Officials said there is no known threat associated with the plane, but it was escorted to John F. Kennedy International Airport as a cautionary move.
The US Department of Homeland Security said it was increasing aviation security measures over packages on the UPS flights.
FedEx Corp., the other major US parcels delivery company, said it had confiscated a suspicious package at its facility in Dubai that had originated in Yemen. "As an additional safety measure, FedEx has embargoed all shipments originating from Yemen," said Maury Lane, a spokesman for the world's largest cargo airline.
British police said some of the items found aboard a UPS plane at East Midlands Airport, 260 km north of London, were sent for further testing. The security cordon around a distribution center at the airport was lifted.
CNN said the plane, traveling to Chicago from Yemen via Britain, was carrying an ink toner cartridge converted into a bomb.
In the United States, UPS planes were checked in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia. The US Transportation Security Administration said the planes had been searched "out of an abundance of caution."
Authorities were investigating reports the packages were bound for a synagogue and Jewish community center in Chicago. "We were notified this morning that synagogues should be on the alert," Linda Haase, associate vice president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, told Reuters.
