Iran's capital city has banned the public from walking pet dogs, as part of a long-standing official campaign to discourage dog-ownership.

Tehran Police Chief Hossein Rahimi said "we have received permission from the Tehran Prosecutor's Office, and will take measures against people walking dogs in public spaces, such as parks".

'Fear and anxiety'

He told the Young Journalists Club news agency that the ban was due to dogs "creating fear and anxiety" among members of the public.

As if this were not draconian enough, Brigadier-General Rahimi added that driving with a dog in your car was also banned.

"It is forbidden to drive dogs around in cars and, if this is observed, serious police action will be taken against the car-owners in question," he told the agency, which was set up by Iran's state broadcaster to train young journalists.

Owning dogs as pets, and walking them in public, has been contentious ever since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, and owners have sometimes had their dogs confiscated.

Dogs are viewed as "unclean" by Iran's Islamic authorities, who also regard dog-ownership as a symbol of the pro-Western policy of the ousted monarchy.

The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance banned the media from publishing any advertisements for pets or pet-related products back in 2010, and there was a push in parliament five years ago to fine and even flog dog-walkers.

The latest anti-dog drive has not created great waves on social media, although one Twitter user asked whether the people of Tehran will be forced to ride camels next.

Although I am not much of a fan of the mullahs, I applaud and cheer this decision.

In India, dogs have exploded in population since the late 90s and have often attacked people and sometimes killed them. And cats, they are almost extinct in many cities here because the dogs kill the cats, brutally.

What a horrible control freak govt.

Indeed .

Just another area where the regime shoves it's nose into people private business. Like harassing woman on their hi-jab , climbing into people rooftops and smashing their satellite dishes etc.

I am sure many Iranians are fed up with that.

I just wonder what dog owners going to do now ?

Good idea

No shit on every area of free ground now:tup:

In the UK you have humans bending over picking up dog shit with their hands and carrying it around in plastic bags, even the dogs are going WTF

The ban on dogs has nothing to do with hygiene , but with the fact that the mullahs view dogs as unislamic.

I tried to check out why and there indeed are number of Hadiths who speak against dog ownership. In contrast the Quran speaks very favorably of dogs :

The Quran contains three mentions of dogs:

  • Verse 5:4 says "Lawful for you are all good things, and [the prey] that trained [hunting] dogs and falcons catch for you."
  • Verse 18:18 describes the Companions of the Cave, a group of saintly young men presented in the Qurʼan as exemplars of religion, sleeping with "their dog stretching out its forelegs at the threshold." Further on, in verse 22, the dog is always counted as one of their numbers, no matter how they are numbered. In Muslim folklore, affectionate legends have grown around the loyal and protective qualities of this dog, whose name in legend is Qiṭmīr.

by the way the persecution of dog owners in Iran did not start today. This is a discussion on the topic from 7 years ago :
