Till now India has conducted six tests out of which four were successful and two failed due to technological reasons. But now India would proudly be a part of the elite club of the ‘BMD haves’ which includes United States, Russia and Israel.

So, India is not yet ahead of China in this field.

Actually, it's the most effective way to destroy BMs. At its apogee, the velocity of the missile is at its lowest velocity due to the fact that only gravity has effect on the missile now. And since missiles can't maneuver in mid course stage, interception rate is the highest.

Only China and US are testing it.

Other countries are focusing on lower altitude missiles such as the Patriot, etc.

The DRDO is developing a new Prithvi interceptor missile codenamed PDV. It will be a two-stage missile and both the stages will be powered by solid propellants. It will have an innovative system for controlling the vehicle at an altitude of more than 150 km. “We expect to have trials of this early next year,” the Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister said.
