Tech Firms Flock to Vietnam

Right... we are suppose to help a country that is hostile to us? What a joke! Vietnam taught us that we should be be careful investing too much of our effort because like in the Vietnam War, they can turn around against you. Vietnamese are ungrateful and had never done a single thing to help us out in anything.

Unfortunately for us, we have limit option as far as investing elsewhere. Currently, we believe in Africa to be the next destination of world manufacturing hub but their people are inherently lazy and whiner. But we will continue to have hope for them. So the next 50 years, they will compete with India, ASEAN to be the next manufacturing hub.

Don't forget that Chinese turned his face to kiss *** of USA 1972, robbed our Islands 1974, biggest traitor in the world is chinese. Dealing business with China is not safe, they could cheat us in any time if they can. Betrayal mentality !

Totally, Vietnam is the last country in the world, along with Mongolia, that should receive any Chinese investment. I still adhere to the principle of 远交近攻。

In fact during this period, when Hanoi was relying heavily on the Chinese for support, the Hanoi authorities seem to have recognized the Spratlys and the Paracels as Chinese territories. Three bits of evidence for this are often cited by China.33 The first is a statement by Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Ung Van Khien to Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Li Zhimin in which the former indicated that Vietnam had recognized the Paracels and the Spratlys as Chinese territory since the days of the Song dynasty. The second is Pham Van Dong's letter dated September 14, 1958. It supported China's statement, extending its territorial waters twelve nautical miles. The statement clearly mentioned the Paracels and Spratlys by name as belonging to China. Third, in May 1965, the (North) Vietnamese Foreign Ministry criticized the United States for defining "part of China's Paracels" as a "fighting operation area."34

When victory was finally attained over the South, however, Hanoi was anxious to pick up all the pieces and claims left by the fallen regime. It acknowledged later that it had indeed previously acquiesced in China's claims to the islands but argued that times since then had changed.

At that time, Vietnam had to struggle against American intervention and aggression. . . . During this period, China regarded American imperialism as its main enemy and firmly supported the anti-American war of the Vietnamese people and was the "Vietnamese people's great rear base." China was one of the biggest aid donors to Vietnam. In the anti-American struggle, China and Vietnam became real friends. Relations between the two were "as close as lips and teeth." . . . During this period of opposing a much stronger enemy, the more Vietnam could let China fight hand in hand with Vietnam, the more advantageous for Vietnam to prevent America from using these two archipelagoes, and avoid attacks from the South China Sea [the East Sea in Vietnamese]. We have to understand the above statements in this spirit.36

With this rationale, in 1975 Vietnam asserted its claims to both the Paracels and the Spratlys and physically took possession of the six Spratly islands that the former South Vietnamese regime had occupied. In later years other islands were added.

This is what happened to Vietnam for its duplicity.

how many of these tech firms are "frocking" to vietnam and what is the total investments?

Nokia is approaching their last breath
Samsung and intel are investing everywhere
Each and everyone of these corps are looking for profits, not for charity!
We are receiving $2bn FDI inflow per month, with 2/3 going to processing and manufacturing industries. We need to further strengthen our manufacturing basis. If VN can lure high number of Japanese businesses currently operating in Thailand (10,000) to move to us, than the future would be fanstastic.

Wow the FDI is quite a whopper.

I wonder why the japanese should move their investments in Thailand to Vietnam if not based on politics and labour costs because Thailand is a lot more developed in infrastructure, and their labour skills are mature.

Your investment in Vietnam are for your benefits, I wish your country don't invest in Vietnam.

Why Vietnam? Actually Thailand is divided, it has Bangkok as a rich and prosperous city and the rest, which is much less developed. Plus Thailand is politically instable, its labor cost is as high as China, while Vietnam is about 1/3 or 2/3 of China.

Vietnam is a late comer, hence we have just attracted about 1,800 Japanese companies until now, while Thailand has nearly 10,000 operating in the country. If we can convince the Japanese to relocate their operations to us, that would accelerate our economic development. For instance Thailand has a very advanced automobile industry.

6. Vietnam has more advanced road infrastructure than the Philippines or Thailand.
Vietnam has begun to make significant investments in infrastructure. Many visitors to Vietnam still view the country's roads as pretty basic. But, for its stage of economic development, Vietnam has been adding road infrastructure at quite a rate.

Its road density reached 0.78 kilometers per square kilometer in 2009, which is higher than the road density in the Philippines or Thailand, both economies that are further on in their development than Vietnam is. That same year, electricity networks covered more than 96 percent of the country. New container ports such as those in Dung Quat and Cai Mep and airports such as those in Da Nang in central Vietnam and Can Tho in the Mekong Delta region have improved connections with the rest of the world.

You invaded Vietnam for rice in the Sino-Vietnam conflict.

In Prosperity Index 2013, Thailand is better than Vietnam in all counts except the following 2 which do not have much to do with infrastructure etc.

http://www.prosperity.com/#!/country/THA

Overall ranking: Thailand 52: Vietnam 62
Safety and Security: T 96 :V 88
Personal Freedom : T 129:V 92

Thailand is more hi-tech oriented. So I dont know which kind of industry that are moving to Vietnam from Thailand

LOL ...Interesting, people of Communist Vietnam have more personal freedom than those of democratic Thailand.
Anyway, Thailand economy is more advanced than Vietnam. For example in automobile industry, tourism, hightech and suporting industries. That is something we can copy from the Thai. I admit they are good at.

Vietnam declines in the ranking partly due to our slowing growth rate...and because

http://www.prosperity.com/#!/country/VNM
Vietnam - 62nd

Vietnam has moved down nine places to 62nd in overall Prosperity compared with 2009.
The country has declined fourty seven places to 92nd in the Social Capital index since 2009, due to decreases in perceptions of social support and in donation rates.
The Entrepreneurship & Opportunity sub-index has risen fourteen places to 68th, since 2009, because of increases in internet bandwidth, mobile phones per 100 people, ICT exports, secure internet servers, alongside decreases in start-up cost.

This decline over five years is, in part, due to the addition of 32 new countries in the 2012 Prosperity Index. In this instance, 3 of these new countries placed above Vietnam.
