Taming PTI?: PML-N weighs options for restoring stature in K-P

SHABQADAR:
In an apparent reversal of its stance of ‘non-interference’ in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s (K-P) political scene, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has stepped up efforts to regain its lost status in the province.

A PML-N insider told The Express Tribune PTI is challenging the party in Punjab, adding the provincial government’s move to block Nato supply lines has also created problems for the PML-N in the centre. The PTI’s aggressiveness is undermining the PML-N, which is why the party has decided to no longer limit itself to the sidelines in K-P, he claimed.

“From day one, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif respected the PTI’s mandate in K-P by refusing to join hands with the Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) to form the government.”

PM Nawaz had also agreed with parliamentarians from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) during the presidential elections to back K-P Governor Shaukatullah Khan, who is well-versed with the tribal region, the source added. The governor’s father and brother serve as MNA and senator, respectively.

Keeping in view PTI chief Imran Khan’s personal interference in K-P’s politics and dharnas in Punjab on inflation, the PML-N will no longer show restraint and is planning to install its own hand-picked governor, said the source. “The US has threatened to stall the Coalition Support Fund unless Nato supply lines are resumed, and this has created problems at the federal level,” he added.

“The party’s provincial leadership, especially our MPAs, have been marginalised by the K-P government,” claimed the insider, maintaining the PML-N desires to bring its governor “as a first step to keep a check on the PTI in the province.”

PML-N MPA from Peshawar, Arbab Akbar Hayat, confirmed his party was contemplating replacing the governor, he added two leaders from the Hazara region are currently being considered for the post. “The first week of January is a suitable time for the change,” Hayat said.

QWP MPA Anisa Zeb Tahir Kheli said they want to form a “grand opposition in K-P to rein in on the PTI government.” She, however, cleared they were not involved in any scheme aimed at destabilising the provincial government through undemocratic means. “But if such a move comes from opposition parties, we will support it, being members of the opposition.”

“We have no such information about an effort against the PTI as yet,” said Tahir Kheli. However, the MPA claimed PTI’s policies “will prove disastrous for its own government as it has failed to deliver.”
