Tamil Nadu: Dalit youth attacked for not covering legs while crossing street

I want to add one more thing before this thread is out to sleep. Please check the per capita rape figures of countries around the world, you will find that per capita rapes in India are lower than the US or China.

Sorry, I do not buy this theory. You know all too well that the India's rape rate is grossly under reported, due to the shame on victims' part, discouragement by police, and due to other social pressures. What media reported were just the worst cases when the victims were injured or died, how many rape cases went unreported? This may also explained the reason we only heard about "gang rape“ instead ”rape“. Are you saying all rape crime cases in Indian are "gang rape” case, since media never reported otherwise?

I read a report from a NGO from India, only 1 out 9 rape cases in India were reported. No to mention 54% Indian women accept family violence as part of normal family life, and more than 50% Indian women admitted they were sexually harassed in their childhood and/or adulthood. So please don't pretend Indian's rape rate is lower than that in America or China.

The most disturbing thing is not the rape crime itself, which happens in every country, but it is the mentality of the rapists and their lawyers, that is unique to only India! They do not think they did anything wrong, and they have no remorse whatsoever. They blame on the victims for what they did to them.

See what was reported on Fox News about the rape culture in India.

It is, in fact, nothing to do with the years of education, it has to do with the total absence of teaching any social science, with any degree of competence. The result is that we have had several generations now (dating this phenomenon from the mid-50s of the last century) of students who have qualified for jobs, and are in jobs, are well paid, have access to the Internet and are comfortable with the uses of a desktop computer. They take all their social science information and knowledge from web-sites, and not from books, leave alone books of any reputation or standing. As might be imagined, this was a disaster.

The internet came to us as a medium proper in the 90s, and actually exploded in 2000-2001.

That's just 15 years.

We are hugely more socially aware than kids of many developed countries.

Our problem (as adults) is that we do not speak with kids.

We talk down to them.

In a lot of ways, we see the same online.

Compare with countries at similar level of development and per capita income. India Is no better no worse.. Rape is under reported in all patriarchal societies. It is also very common. Travel a little and see what happens in Africa, the Caribbean, Egypt. Egyptian girls find it hard just to get to work due to s3xual harresment on the roads. Rapist do not show remorse anywhere because they are @ssholes...check with Bill Cosby....he still has the same smug smile on his face to this day.

Look at primary sources not at news stories. Data trumps perception.

I believe I have.

Internet None of the above.

All of us have our leadership coming into our homes day after day via these selfsame photo/videographic devices.

As we do the incidents and the victims and the perpetrators and those who oppose our leadership.

Our window to our world at large, besides that which we live in locally and see for ourselves.

So my question:This tinge of guilt then and this smug look now - you've seen it ?

Cheers, Internet Zarthosti Doc

That is incorrect, Doc. The Internet Hindu is not necessarily a different animal when he is not on the Internet. The difference that the Internet makes to him is to be able to network, and to be able to say to many more people whatever he thought. But the essential character was built up after the opening up of engineering and its associated training scheme.

the trouble started in the 50s.

In case nobody has whispered into your little ears, this is a public forum, not a private e-mail messaging centre. All posts can be answered by all members at all times. When you act like an imbecile, you become my business, because I like to correct imbeciles. Just behave normally, and I will pay you what attention you deserve if you behave normally - no attention at all.

I'm a bit of a language racist like you too Joe (yes, you are).

But I work in a highly technical environment. And I've colleagues (and some, a very few, approaching friend status) who are brilliant professionally, but with very limited and initially pretty vernacular English skills.

But they learn on the job, and with time actually develop a sense of style and personal touches, so that it still sounds funny, but it blends into the background of the person's overall persona and skill set.

There are guys Joe who I was frankly shocked to realize had taught themselves English in college, and had gone through school in either Hindi or Marathi medium.

I have only the hugest of respect for such guys Joe. It is unthinkable for me, having grown up in my environment. But people do it.

That is the essence of the upwardly mobile Hindu, and Indian.

That is how we are building our nation, brick by brick.

You need to embrace it sir. Be less elitist, don't mind a youngster telling you that.

These are our people. Even the Internet Hindus. These are my countrymen. And women. Look beyond the rustic edges to see the aspirational Indian undeterred by lack of language or social graces, wanting to better his lot for his kids.

Not everyone is born into English speaking families, and gotten an Ivy league education. Does not make them any bit lesser than those that have, either socially, spiritually, academically or philosophically. They are just as clued in. Yes they cannot talk or write fancy, and yes they are not as well read. But the innate Indian mind is there full spectrum.

You've made your point, Doc. And it's a valid point. I'll be less harsh in future, less of a grammar Nazi.

PS: That was meant for Joe in the street, not for the yob I was responding to. However he has learnt his English, this level of crudity is not on. It will only get him lumps from me.
