TALON Robots for Pakistan

Pakistan’s civil war has ebbed somewhat over the last couple of years, but it hasn’t gone away external link, and Pakistani Taliban guerrillas will eventually return from Syria external link. Land mines and improvised explosives remain a problem, and the return of highly trained Islamists will make it worse.

The Hurt Locker external link was a good movie, but nobody wants to do it that way unless they have to….

In July 2013, QinetiQ North America in Waltham, MA received a $7.8 million sole-source, firm-fixed-price Pakistani contract for Talon IV robots external link, spares, and training. The Talon IV is used by US military EOD (explosive ordnance disposal technicians), using their remote cameras and robotic arm to investigate potential land mines. Once found, they can carry explosives over to the site, and set the charge for subsequent detonation by their human controller.

Work on this contract will be performed in Waltham, MA (99%), and Pakistan (1%) and is expected to be complete by December 2013. It’s a Foreign Military Sale project, with all funds committed immediately, and the US Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division in Indian Head, MD manages the buy as Pakistan’s agent (N00174-13-C-0018).

We need many robots who can perform these tasks easily, A very good step.

I thought Pakistan had their own Indigenous program on robots...

Me too,in couple of threads I found few paks wear swearing about having equivalent or better robots compared to Indian counterpart (daskh n others)

Please look at the news again. $7.8 million for the fiscal year. Whose fiscal year? Pakistan's?. Nope, when exchanges of that sort are undertaken through the FMS program and in this case allotted funds already.

The Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program provides grants and loans to help countries purchase weapons and defense equipment produced in the United States as well as acquiring defense services and military training. FMF funds purchases are made through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program,

In other words.. the US is financing this purchase.

Making robots like these is really not difficult.. and many of these types crown engineering university projects. However, those require significant investment to and self financing to bring to the field.
Here ,Pakistan is essentially being given it for free....Which is better?

Good news for Pakistan

Bangladesh SWAT team is already using Talon Robot, do not know about army.

Why not send a Talib prisoner to defuse the bomb? :D

My methods are always cheaper and socially beneficial. Imagine having me as your next PM. :P

What if he carries the bomb with him and threaten the people standing or try to walk to the police?? Or what if he throws the bomb away to some people?? Risk is involved but snipers should be onto him! If he tries anything stupid then his bhejha urra do!! :sniper:

Although you answered your own questions, yet the Emperor has to shell out free advice:

1. What happens when the Talib picks the bomb and starts running?
A. You shoot him in the head.

2. What if he tries to throw the bomb?
A. You send an amputee Talib, and tell him to defuse it with his teeth, or ELSE!

Total cost: One bullet.
Defused successfully: You get to abuse the Talib more till next time.
Unsuccessful: A dead Talib is a good Talib.
