Taliban chief says victory in Afghanistan "close"

If more troops are sent to Afghanistan, the world media will scream bloody murder over the "imperialist thugs with their boot heels on the throats of Afghani civilians." So what is the answer? Immediate pullout will result in chaos, misery, civil war.

Any direct military confrontations inevitably result in a Taliban defeat; thus, they are limited to bombings, pot-shots, IED's, and patience. In the meantime, they are gassing girls' schools and brutalizing any Afghani's who help NATO.

So we need to pick an option - loosen up the ROE, recognize that war is ugly, and finish the job. Or pull out. This half-way approach isn't working.

On aid and other economic incentives - I have a friend in Afghanistan who is trying to help distribute millions (billions overall) in economic aid, medicine, food. Roughly 85% of it is being stolen. There is no reliable mechanism in place to get the aid to those who need it. They'll drop off a huge stock of medical supplies to a local clinic, and in two days, the bulk of it is being sold openly in markets and bazaars.

I wonder if this commentary is on INCOMPETENCE of ISAF or a complaint to Afghans?

Did not NATO and USA went in Afghanistan with BIG claims, they are still struggling to reach even after 9+ years?

They have no other options left on TABLE now.:agree: Talk and WALK(OUT)!

Any aid delivered must eventually funnel to local organizations that (in theory) should get it to those who need it.

I guess NATO was foolish in thinking there'd be Afghan organizations that would actually distribute supplies without skimming 85% of it first. Bad NATO, bad.

Is the Taliban in power...and who is hiding in caves afraid to look at the sun not knowing if a predator drone is about to send a missile into his ***?

Goals are relative...will the Taliban or whoever else in power dare to provide refuge to a terrorist like Laben who will attack the US again?. Of course not.

This isn't the first time the US / NATO are dealing with these people;
in most of the cases they are dealing with the same people they dealt with during the soviet times.

Were they really so naive to think that Afghans will distribute it ?

And you are suggesting USA went into Afghanistan just to make sure that OBL was taken care of ?

does it make sense ? look at the length and nature of operation does it look like
they are ONLY taking care of OBL ?

As you said goals are relative and pretty much of what was said about Taliban in the caves can be turned around to fit NATO / USA, as they too can not venture out of the compounds without 100,000 $ USD support and cover effort.

Isn't this a relative defeat for NATO/USA ?

:smokin: Poor you!
TALIBAN are still holding the ground, be it in caves (being CAVE-MEN). ISAF are still to yet realize a DEMOCRATIC Afghanistan after 9 years of blood and carnage! Still to FIND OBL and Mulla Omar. Still to present the PROOF of Taliban or ALQAIDA involvement in 9/11 tragedy. Still far from eradicating poppy production in Afghanistan. They are still .... and on and on.

Do you see the difference here?
:disagree:

Initial goals were destruction of Al-Queda as a centrally controlled organization with an established structure based in a nation state. Both these goals have been achieved.

Democracy etc in Afghanistan are goals which came later and may not be possible.A pity for the Afghanis but something which does not affect Americans directly.

As long as the first 2 goals are met and there is the certainty that no other country will willingly host terrorists who plan attacks on America or Americans anymore, America can consider Afghanistan a moderate success.

Democracy in Afghanistan does not affect the US...it being a terrorist host does.

Oh and don't worry,Laden and Mullah Omer will be killed...sooner or later they will look at the sky and a predator will be watching...

The purpose of those goals were to make America more secure. Afghanistan has probably made more enemies then it killed.

I don't believe that...America is more secure today than at any other point before 9/11.

Individual lunatics will still try to stage the random attacks but there will never be a centralized strike like 9/11 again.

Day dreaming is a possible solution(or illusion) for ISAF, now.

. . . .
A taliban supporter in India...hmmm.

Surprising? Not really. We have plenty of those here in the states. Anyways, as i see it, the Taliban have to make claims like this, otherwise money and men would dry up quicker than it takes to type out the word liar!

It is the other way round dear. NATO has reluctant partner in this war.Parteners that are ready to abundon coalition on the first oppurtunity. Parteners that are always reluctant to contribute more from USA.:smitten:

How many times did you hear Taliban fighters abndoning the fight for Afghanistan? :P
